I tried to delete it but no happs.
Anyways I ordered some Macht Schnell scoops yedterday, and didn't think to research it but I probably should have ordered a water/meth controller instead. I'm still running a Hobbs switch, oh well... |

Do they work?
Lol, must say, I had them on my 135i mainly for aesthetic purposes since I had a red interior. Of course I was curious if they would provide any benefit or not.
On the 135i, I felt it was pointless, as the air was already channeled nicely into the intake, forced by the twin turbos. I really don't think I felt a noticeable difference. There are a few independent dyno graphs from the skeptics of these products, however, it is on an N/A V10 M5 and V8 M3, claims ranging from 4-14hp. Seems they are effective at higher speeds to channel air for N/A engines. Yet to see any hp+ claims with dyno for turbo charged cars. |

The limitation is the TINY holes which are in the horizontal plane. Their surface area (or port size) to pass air is significantly smaller than the 3" diameter intake tubing.
Also the air has to take a two 90 degree bends in rapid succession. One is un-radiused or virtually instantaneous--the transition from outside, horizontally oriented, laminar-flow air to quickly vertical, then a radiused transition to horizontal again into the airbox. This is to keep bugs, large debris, and heavier objects out of the airbox. I believe it was also designed this way to take outside, pressurized, laminar flow air and transition it to turbulent flow (increased massflow rate) and for sound abatement. If you can open up these holes to exceed the port flow area of the tubing behind it, then perhaps your scoops could begin to make a difference. Last edited by nicklockard; 10-24-2016 at 11:53 AM.. Reason: edited 'faster moving' to increased massflow rate. |
