N54 turbo upgrades

Hello everyone,

I am looking to upgrade my turbos without going to a single turbo, currently I have the basics like a charge pipe, intake, downpipes, and jb4. I am just wondering if some of you out there could tell me about what turbos you went with, what problems you ran in to, and what other supporting mods you had to do to help with the power increase.

thank you, and I look forward to hearing the advice.

Depends on what your individual power goals are. Are you looking to be the next fastest BMW in the city? or just more pep in your car?

All things considered, when my turbos go out, i hope to have enough saved for a pair of VTT turbos.

I went for MMP Stage 3 w/ td04 and couldn't be happier. Still tuning them in, but already the car feels and sounds a million bucks. Install wasn't as easy as I'd hoped, but mainly because I'm RHD.

You could get your OEM turbos refurbished with new waste gate fixes and larger turbines from Turbo America. For about 1100-1200.00. Only deal is that you'll be out a car for about 2-3 weeks.

I have read pretty much only bad things about those. Turbos fail, turbos aren't vsr balanced, questionable methods, etc. There may be a few happy customers, but I'd say they're the minority.

The VTT GC Lites seem like the hot ticket at the moment, based on their results thread, and the kit looks super nice.

Wedge has had great results with the Hexon kit which offers great value too (RR600 is 2-3 weeks out based on their website)

Check out the thread on Pure's new Stage 2 DD which are also specced for ~600whp

I hope you two are joking about Hexon. They recently screwed a lot of customers, and they didn't even lube it up first. Don't waste your money. You won't get any turbos.

Didn't know that, thanks for the update. GC Lite and Pure Stg 2 DD are the ones to have then.

Go Pure if you must have it now. There is a lot of hype around GC Lites, but they have just arrived. Dont think people have even received the first batch. Wait on them if you want them, and see how the reports are. Chris has done well to change the public perception of VTT, but the product still is largely untested in the real world by consumers.
Their previous turbos werent really known for lasting. Pure has the best reputation.
Hexons have shut down. There are RBs as well, but that smoking thing comes up every now and then. Also, MMP, and they have good customer service.

I would like to hear more about these guys and feedback from those who have them installed. 650 for a stock rebuild or 1050 for upgraded wheels sound good.

They started sending emails to do charge backs since the main person left or got overwhelmed. Once that happened, everyone jumped ship.
I heard shortly after that there was going be someone taking over. If that has happened, it has happened quietly and nothing has been announced.

First you need to say what power goals you are looking for and what is your budget.
Look at the pricing and try to figure out what is going on. Stage 2 and 2+ are now discontinued for VTT. Your only choice is the GCLs if you stick with entry level VTT. If Pure is your choice then you can choose PS2 or PS2+. At these levels you are in the early to mid $3000 range. If you want balls to the wall then you would be looking more to the regular VTT GC , which put you into single turbo territory . Ps2+ is most likely a direct competition for the regular VTT GC but at a lower cost. Also remember that you need to pay core charges for stock turbos being modified , but not the cast versions VTT is offering.

As for reliability, I don't know why we have not heard more feedback from all the people. No one is doing a journal.
Oh well.

(?t) PS2= $3095
(?t) PS2+= $3595
15t VTT2=$2499
16t VTT GC lites= $3199
19t/20t VTT2+= $3499
19t tdo4hl VTT GC = $4199

There are dyno results out for each one but I don't have the time to go paste them in.

I will read these threads later today, thank you for sending me links.

Sorry for everyone involved

Why is Grand_hustle17 involved in all kind of problems with turbo companies?

Sort of. The GC's aren't really comparable to any other competitor offering; our cast manifolds flow a ton more air and get rid of the factory bottle neck. We out spool and out power the competition there -it's not even close. See attached graph. Our old stage 2+ were more comparable but as mentioned above, we phased them out in favor of the GC family. In our opinion it makes anything else obsolete.

Of our current offerings, the GC lites are more comparable. Our best dyno with them was about 650 whp but on a tired motor -we expect to be able to pick up a little more horsepower when we put them on a fresh motor for continued testing. The lites spool even quicker than the regular GC's and have very little lag. HP edge may go to the competitor here but I would expect it to be close.

Super fun turbo -I am planning on putting them on my personal car and capping it around 600-620ish whp. Nothing on the market will spool faster and make that power, and again, it's not even close.

The GC+'s (not released yet) are undergoing testing now and are big boy turbos. We're expecting 800+ whp but you do take a hit on spool (that's how it goes). Release likely late this year, testing is not done. No more details until we're ready.

GC are currently in stock, shipping same or next day. Lites are now in stock too -same/next day shipping.

Let me know if I can help.

Chris

Keep in mind: The results we post are using an off the shelf backend flash and a quick dyno tune with JB4. We don't sit our forged motor car on the dyno and tweak and tweak the flash until we have a result we are looking for. We supply results that are repeatable for our customers. Actually most of our posted results ARE customer cars. No doubt, if we were obsessed with having the most pretty dyno sheet stretched across the screen, we would hire a flash tuner to tweak our tune until it looked best as possible. We are too busy for that. We post realistic results. When making a choice on turbos, one should wait to see repeatable results coming in from customers before concluding a decision. All these twin turbo options spool fast. That's the great thing about twins on the N54. We at PURE Turbos, have achieved our goal of a reliable, powerful, proven twin turbo upgrade for the N54 community.
