Woodcliff Lake, NJ – November 1, 2016… Sales of BMW brand vehicles decreased 18.4 percent in October for a total of 24,017 compared to 29,439 vehicles sold in October, 2015. Year-to-date, the BMW brand is down 9.0 percent in the U.S. on sales of 254,150 vehicles compared to 279,395 sold in the first ten months of 2015.

Notable vehicle sales in October include the BMW 7 Series which increased to 1,133 cars, the BMW X1 which increased to 2,710 vehicles, and the BMW X3 which increased to 3,680 vehicles.

“The volatility of the U.S. market is more clearly evident as the pace of sales continues slowing from the peak of 2015,” said Ludwig Willisch, President and CEO, BMW of North America. “At the same time, BMW Sports Activity Vehicles – X1 to X6 - have set a new record, more than 100,000 sold year to date, accounting for 47% of our October sales, with room for more growth as demand for these popular models continues to increase.”

BMW Group Sales
In total, the BMW Group in the U.S. (BMW and MINI combined) reported October sales of 27,971 vehicles, a decrease of 16.6 percent from the 33,526 vehicles sold in the same month a year ago. Year-to-date, BMW Group sales are down 9.6 percent on sales of 297,015 vehicles in the first ten months of 2016 compared to 328,456 in the same period in 2015.

MINI Brand Sales
For October, MINI USA reported 3,954 automobiles sold, a decrease of 3.3 percent from the 4,087 sold in the same month a year ago. Year-to-date, MINI USA reported a total of 42,865 automobiles sold, a decrease of 12.6 percent from 49,061 automobiles sold in the first ten months of 2015.

So they consider the X1 a passenger vehicle?

It would be interesting to see these numbers broken out by M vs non-M.

I think people are well aware its better to buy used since they depreciate so fast now.

M cars are around 5 percent of the volume of the regular model.

With the number of sales of new vehicles that dealers converted to DEMO models at the end of 2015 so they could keep the sales crown ... that's really not a big surprise at all.

Eventually all those expanded demo fleets on the lot need to go....

Another factor at play is very aggressive lease buyback programs. Lease buyback cars become preowned cars. Earlier this year I picked up a 2013 X1 M sport for around 25k and walked right past a 2015 model with the exact same features ( save different interior leather ) languishing on the same dealer with a sticker of 47k and of course there were also 2016 F48 models right alongside.

With the current CPO program, I have no idea why anyone would purchase new. I had a wonderful experience with ED on our 3, but numbers to paper, CPO is hard to beat I think. I think I would go CPO here on out.

100K warranty etc...

I actually bought a non CPO as the cost to have it certified ( around 2-3k) just didn't seem to have the right value for the dollar .. however the cars on the lot with that baked in were very attractive.

I was curious how closely the Ms moved up and down with non-Ms or if the M sales stayed flatter.

The workers at the factory in Germany are working too hard and need a break. That's why BMW cut all the incentives and jacked up the interest to slow down sales, so the workers can enjoy the holidays coming.

Hmmm...Can't imagine eliminating free scheduled maintenance would have any impact on sales...

Wrong-headed solution to drive brand excitement: "Let's make a multimillion dollar mini epic film that only underscores how shitty the the new 5 Series engine sounds."

Not sure who's running the show at BMW but they are getting seriously off track. If they had any brains, they would focus on actually meeting M2 demand and eliminate the i3 & i8 models.

or better yet, maybe they could give the I8 a more deserving engine.

BMW diluted their brand by over producing for years and cheapening their cars in particular 2 and 3 series models
they need to focus more on luxury and revise that electric steering system they have that probably is amongst the worst in the industry
and work on sound for M cars

This is why I won't be ordering a M240ix this month after all. I'll have to wait to see if they bring back something decent. I was about ready to pull the trigger until I saw all the incentives were killed.

The 5-Series should see a boost after the G3X is released.
It's so much better.

But the tired old F30 3-Series needs to be replaced ASAP.

Lots of people here complaining about maintenance and incentives, indicating that these might be the cause of the drop.

This could well be the reason, but look at it from their point of view... Globally sales are up, and even though the US numbers have dropped - without the incentives and free maintenance, profitability should be up. Turnover for vanity, profit for sanity.

I think the things are much better than it seems from this topic.

1. 16% drop in October is exaggerated. The October had 2 working days less than the previous year, so only this accounts for ~9% of sales drop. (let's see data for November, I bet it will be much much better).

2. Series 5 sales are seriously hurting the numbers, and this is perfectly normal since the model is currently being retired. Once G30 goes on sale, it will lift the numbers significantly.

3. Most of the CPO cars are actually new demo cars.

4. BMW cut incentives in the USA, and I'm really happy for that. In general they are making fools out of the buyers in the rest of the world when they are selling cars in the USA so cheap. Here in Europe we are very upset by the US/European prices. Since the global sales are hitting all time highs and are limited mostly by supply, there is no reason to offer such a great deals in America anymore. It's much better to sell more cars on a more profitable markets than selling them cheap in the US.

BMW is no longer a fun vehicle to drive. There was a time a BMW was the " Ultimate Driving Machine." Heavy steering, handling was unmatched by any other car in its segment. Now, there boring vehicles. You could save yourself a lot of money, and buy another brand with more standard options, better steering, similar or a better driving experience ( road feel.)
