New e92-dump synth oil for break-in?
Hey guys, I've searched some on this, but the opinions vary. I am about to get a new e92 328i and was wondering about the notion of dumping the synthetic oil for standard for about 1000 miles for early break-in. Will this void my warranty, is it a good idea, any thoughts on which conventional oil to use if at all? Also, if there is no dipstick, how will I know how much oil to put in? Thanks all.

as for the dipstick, there is none but there is a function to check the oil level electronically from the dash. also could check the manual and see how many quarts the car holds if filling from empty. |

Yes it will void you warranty using any oil not listed as BMW certified oil for that car. If you run into an engine problem and that problem was caused by you using standard oil your warrant is toast.
The engine is pretty much broken already but would not recommend driving it like you stoled it for the recommended 1200 mile break in period. After that it is perfectly fine to do a DIY oil change using certified synthetic oil.

What I would do is just take it easy for the first 1200miles, follow the break-in recommendation in the manual and just change the oil at around 2k miles and let the free maintenance take over by then. Thats what I'm doing on my new non-leased e92.

You do know that you don't have to change the oil until the car tells you right. Doing it after 1200 miles or something like that is just a waste of time and money.

Break in oil change
Well, I don't agree with you Socrates. During break in is when the good stuff wears down and makes its way into your oil. If you plan on owning the car, an oil change around 1500-2000 miles is money well spent.

In theory, synthetic oil reduces wear. Wear is necessary for engine break in. In an ideal world, removing the synthetic and putting in non synthetic for the first 1000 miles is actually the best way to INSURE a QUICK and complete break in. In reality, the car will break in with synthetic but not as quickly. I have seen no posts about engines blowing up, but IF you did have a problem you do risk voiding your warranty. Engine will break in just fine with synthetic. Can you say MotoMan?

I read countless debates about this and I would much rather spend $150 to change the oil at 2000 even if its for a peace of mind. IMHO its money well spent if you plan to purchase/keep your car.
