Hi folks,

There seems to be a slight diesel smell in the cabin. It isn't heavy like I can't breathe or anything but enough to annoy.

What part usually fails to cause this? Or is it normal? Anyone think it would be covered by the 70k/7 year emissions warranty?

i have the same thing, ppl say its the weld on the egr cooler most of the time

Yea, check out the EGR cooler in the front of the engine.

egr cooler, leaky injector, boost leak, crack in the exhaust, intake not on properly, list goes on and on..

Add the following to the list:

-differential pressure sensor and its two tubes off of DPF;
-exhaust pressure sensor and its connection to the manifold, especially, the rubber portion of the connection.

Is there an abnormal hissing sound coming from the engine bay while accelerating?

Hi Folks,

Took the engine cover off and found a slight leak on the left side of the engine. Any idea what it is? Also, any tips on getting the engine cover back in and lining up all the fasteners correctly?

Major, what a small world, I just replaced that line Saturday. The oil runs over the turbo and gives off the smell.
The line was 65$ from BMW dealer.

Would you happen to have the part number? Was it hard to change? Any tips?

Sorry buddy on the part #, but BMW located it fast.
As for install just remove the heat shield and two bolts, easy.
I did spray the engine down with cleaner after, but I got cleaner smell coming in now.

Why don't you start your car with the cover off and let someone rev it for you and you with a flashlight can see where the smoke is coming from.

Just make sure you differentiate between the burn oil smell and raw diesel smell.

If you are good with tools you can just do the change by unfastening the top bolt on the turbo heat shield and do it that way.

I have a 35d (essentially same engine) which had a similar issue. In my case, one of the upper turbo bolts had fallen off, and another was extremely loose. You can read my experience here:

Of course, the loose turbo bolts might not be your issue. On the other hand, I discuss how to get the turbo heat shield off to get to the turbo oil line.

They are great. Prices for OEM stuff are the best. Shipping sometimes may take a tad longer cos they may have to go source parts. However, for some things Bosch, etc. you can find a Bosch pn and get non-BMW labelled part for cheaper. I think ECS carries them.

Alrighty, just replaced the line. It was a little tricky so I ended up removing the air filter and housing. I didn't removed the furtherest bolt that holds the heat shield as I managed to pull it up just enough to get the bolt off (also just looking at that made me not want to go through the trouble). The whole area was covered by a light amount of oil so I hope this solves the problem.

Question for folks, is this specific oil line the one that usually fails or could it have been a couple of them?

So - with full ABC delete, EGR block - why would a slight smell still be present with heater on..?

Smell your tail pipes?
Some have said the down pipe connection can leak slightly as well, and you should put copper anti-seize on the metal gasket. I didn't and I get quite a noticeable smell right away with the recirc off.

What do you mean, connection with SCR cat or engine-dpf?
