Dog story
Had to board my beautiful puppy (collie) at vet for turkey day.
When I dropped him off, I discovered a tick on his lower neck. They promised to have vet call me to let me know they got it out. Since they didn't call, I called back Busy, Promised vet would call. No call. Do you think it's inhumane for the vet to delay taking the tick off my dog until Saturday after they reopen? Today is Wednesday and tomorrow is Thanksgiving. I pay top dollar for boarding and they all are very nice and seems to do a great job, Am I overreacting? |

I think the puppy will be fine until Saturday or the vet would say otherwise. No vet is going to the office to remove a tick on a holiday unless there is a crisis. There may be 24-hour emergency centers for pets nearby where you could take the puppy if concerned. Also talk to your vet about NexGuard or other flea and tick medicine. I don't recall when you start giving it age-wise, but you need a flea and tick solution going forward.
Also, you may want to check with other dog owners near you that you know to see if there is an alternative to boarding at the vet. We did that once and our dogs hated it. Sometimes you can find someone in your area to watch your dog at their home where they can interact with other dogs and not be confined to a crate for as long as they are at the vet.

Nobody cares as much as you do about your possessions.....cars, home, pets included. If you expect otherwise, you're just fooling yourself. That said, I wouldn't worry, but when you pick up your puppy, definitely inquire with the vet why you weren't called - I'll bet the vet never got the message that you called and the front desk brushed you off - common occurrence before a holiday - staff wants to get home so no distractions which delay that primary goal.

Agree with ^. Chances are the concerns fell on deaf ears (staff)
Trust me, I am absolutely in your corner in the sense that I'd feel the need to raise all holy hell for letting any discomfort happen to my dog while on their watch. But go in there, find out why it didn't get taken care of- then proceed to understand and emphatically state it should never happen again, or if the vet simply didn't want to- prepare to touch gloves.

Do you always call the vet when you find a tick on him? Why didn't you remove the tick as soon as you found it?
I hope he's alright and tick-free though

Why did you leave the tick on? It takes about 24 to 48 hours to transmit Lyme disease. Next time pull the parasite off as soon as you see it and then take the dog in if you want the vet to test for lyme's disease.

Pull that little fucker off and flush him down the toilet. As Delta said, the sooner you get the tick off your dog, the better. I don't understand how a tick could become a hard bump. Just take tweezers and pull it out!
I've had Lyme three times and I've probably pulled 50 ticks off my dog over the years. It's nothing to freak out about if you know what to look for and if it's treated early (if the dog does have lyme, which it may not).

I wasn't worried about removing the tick. I was worried about unnecessarily digging a hole in the pups head. Can I have my card back now? |

You're at the back of the line now! I haven't received mine back after my idiot husband told my friends I screamed when I was attacked by a vicious rat (according to my husband, the rat walked past me meters away). 10 years later and I'm still rebuilding my image.

If you noticed the tick, why not take him to an emergency clinic to have it removed on the spot if you or the technician couldn't? Did they tell you the vet was coming in specifically that day? If they gave you an expectation and didn't deliver, then you have every right to be pissed.
Either way, you definitely lose your man card. Tick removal isn't open heart surgery. Gloves, tweezers, pull, anti-septic and done.

The hubby walked in while I was doing that, and he tried to kill the poor bastard that is the only rat I've ever seen in Finland, I thought it was someones lost pet and to stop my homicidal hubby, I might have let out a manly howl. My buddies came to play poker to our house that night and those fuckers got drunk (while I was 39 weeks pregnant) and shared all my most humiliating stories from my history, including that poor rat story that may have two very different versions to it. Even the whole being pregnant thing didn't destroy my image as the biggest and hardest mofo as efficiently as that rodent did. Just rub it in...

Maybe I'm crazy (I am a cat person) but nothing I'll ever do with my 'man card' will ever come close to delivering a baby - scares me just thinking about it. Pass around a few pics of a C-section and see who's ranking on whom.

I'm cool with cuts, broken bones, sprains, bites, kicks, card game injuries, kids being sick, hell I've put diapers to a grown man in my life. I've been the first one on accident scenes and some idiot tried to rob me with a knife a few years back. I'm pretty tough. Just today some old bat chewed me a new one because I am apparently unworthy to have a dog and she would've done everything she could've to save hers. That one made me laugh out loud (my dog got in to fight because hes stupid, ran and I spent the whole weekend in the woods with every damn person I know looking for his idiot ass. We got him after 42 hours and I only ran around 40 miles in that time looking for the idiot). I'm pretty sure I have in storage the man cards of most men I know, but sadly my own is lost forever, I had a physical one framed to my wall before that damn rat.
