BMW trademarks M1 - M8 CS names

Could recent trademarks filed by BMW point to hardcore performance models up and down the M lineup? According to Auto Guide, BMW has filed patents with the World Intellectual Property Organization for names M1 CS through the M8 CS, including the M4 CS model name.

The first CS models may be represented by the recently spotted BMW M2 and BMW M4 prototypes, which when they come to market, will be models focused even more on track use. Compared to the standard M models, the CS models will potentially receive a power increase (perhaps maybe even a totally new engine in the case of the M2 CS), suspension tweaks and aerodynamic parts such as more aggressive front splitter and rear spoiler or wing.

Besides establishing the possibility for CS models, these trademarks also reveals a possible M8 model. Is BMW simply protecting the M8 name for possible future use or is there an actual M8 in the works. We shall see...

Happy Thanksgiving to all.

I think BmW is just keeping their options open. I doubt we will see all those CS models. But an M2, M4, M6 CS model I would say is surely coming. Just my opinion.

Agreed. Doubt we'll see an M7 or M8 anytime soon.

For those who have more knowledge than I, has BMW hinted towards cost increase for CS trims? Or is this just a variant of the GTS for us less educated peasants. I am within 12 month of purchase but if these are on the horizon I'd like to see the cost

Scott26 alluded to this around two years ago with an M4 CS image.

There would be cars above M, more hardcore cars such as M2 CS, M4 CS and M6 CS.

Since the suffix CSL is only used sparingly in BMW history the CS moniker opens up a lot variables.

M8 CS better be a real special car!

I think the 1 would be the special one. It states M1, not 1M, is being trademarked and history shows the M1 was more the ultimate BMW car. The 8 was more a grand tourer.

Bmw ain't making no supercar. Keep dreaming guys it's just trademarked as an option but My dream of a real supercar by BMW is dead in my opinion.

What if the M8 would use the I8 chassis?

I would be very interested in this model assuming it is more track-focused than the ZCP for perhaps only a few thousand more (in other words - almost like a Z07 package for the ZCP) - perhaps a $5-6k increase over ZCP (although my guess is that it will be a much higher premium over the ZCP than that...

Sounds good to me. These cars would be on par with "black series" Mercedes?

That's what I want to see. Ideally, the M8 would have the M5/M6 engine (but better) in an I8 chassis. Not sure if it would really work, but definitely would like to see an M8 with I8 styling.

Trademarks are cheap .. easy to check their option.

On par in terms of snob appeal.

Far above in terms of actual performance (we can only hope).

I think what SCOTT26 was alluding to for what you reference is the CSL, not the CS.

Where: Base ///M < Competition Packet < GTS < CSL

I don't believe the CS will fit that "CSL" bill. The mule pictured in the OP does not look that extreme. I see the CS simply as more track focused variant slotted somewhere between the Competition pack and GTS.

I don't think so.

I think the M4 CS will be slotted against the upcoming C63-R, since the GTS will be out of production by then.

It is the CSL that will compete against the Black Series IMO.

"Is BMW simply protecting the M8 name for possible future use or is there an actual M8 in the works."

Definitely in the works. Along with a mid-engined 'vette. :

I think they are aligning themselves to MB, and what I think Audi may be doing shortly. I think it would compare this was against MB and their C-Class lineup:

MB C43 -> BMW 440i (Add power increase to M Sport)
MB C63 -> BMW M4
[No Comp] -> BMW M4 CS (More powerful engine/tune, but no enhancements else where)
MB C63S -> BMW M4 Competition Pack
MB C63R -> BMW M4 GTS
MB C63 Black Series (2nd to last model year, end of cycle) -> [No Comp] (I think if BMW sees upmarket moves from M4 to GTS or CS), or KPI's in the extreme performance segment, they may enter here several steps above the benchmarks used for MB's development of this vehicle.
