It only mentioned complaints and issues of engine knocking...now the recall is to make sure the issue won't turn into catastrophic engine failure....
probably the subarus do not have "limp mode" and directly messed up the engine if the problem continues....

Actually, with the 07 tune that 08's have as well, engine can spontaneously combust (externally) after around 15k miles. The stop recall is on further defective models. My buddy just picked up an 08 a few weeks ago, and he's like 100 cars short of being on the list.
