Best Oil for my car
Hey all, I've been putting nothing but mobil 1 0w-40 in my car because wallmart has a great price on it but i learned that it isn't on the bmw ll-01 list because the formula changed (or maybe bmws turbos want something better or something)
I'm currently chasing an oil leak and am about to change my oil again(and will use mobil 1 because of the cost until I find the leak) but should I be using something better? Is there a "better oil" or am I stupid for even worrying about it Last edited by e90dum; 12-02-2016 at 09:45 AM.. |

N52 engine manual specifies that 5w30 or 5w40 is suitable for all weather conditions. since you drive it hard, 5W40 NO EXCEPTIONS!

Go read on some UOA's.
The euro formula castrol is not the greatest, as it sheers down a full weight in oil within 2k miles. You want an oil with high zddp content to protect the motor during hard use. That said, all street automobile oils must meet specific regulations and as such, there is a limit on how much zddp can be used, as it burns out the cat more quickly. You need to look to other oils, such as ones specified for racing or even truck oils. A popular and well known oil with high zddp content, 5w40 group 4 synthetic is Shell Rotella T6. Many track guys run it, and this oil holds up to the abuse. It is high in detergents (it is meant for a diesel engine!), but also is highly resistant to sheering (read: it retains it's 40 weight longer, despite use in elevated engine temps)..it also does not need to confine to an automobile specific regulation for zddp content, as it is a truck oil. I use this in all my track cars which require a 5w30 or 5w40 oil. Aside from that, I've had tremendous luck with Redline. This is an ester based oil (group 5), so is a little different, but also doesn't need to confine to the same regulations as standard car oils. It's good stuff, though more expensive.

uh, do you understand SAE ratings at all? 0W40 is not a "zero weight" oil. the first number refers to how well it pours when cold - it has nothing to do with protecting your engine under load, but it does protect it better when the oil is cold and getting it pumped everywhere when you first start the engine. Otherwise, it's no different than a 5W40.

And for what it's worth, Ferrari's are spec'd with 0w40 oil. To Hassmaschine's point, there is nothing wrong with a 0. It only denotes the viscosity of the oil before it reaches operating temp.

Also, if you're not sure go here - www.bobistheoilguy.com great resource like e90post to do some research, but it's all about oil and lubrication instead of e9x cars. |

![]() The old M1 formulations were poo after that whole lawsuit they got into with Castrol marketing semi-synthetics as true synthetics. When they lost, they also dropped down to semi-synthetic formulas. However, their 0w40 is a true synth. It isn't a bad oil. Nor is it fantastic however. For street use, I wouldn't be to worried.

I'm sold to Castrol and very frequent oil changes, never had a engine failure with any of my cars no matter how hard I beat on them and me or mechanics that work on the car are always impressed how clean the engine is when let's say changing the vcg, also when I have oil leaks seems to leak less with the Castrol versus other oil of same weight, so yeah as I said I'm sold to Castrol lol
