Next Generation Toyota Corolla to get BMW engine?

It was in December 2011 when BMW and Toyota reached an agreement to work on a series of eco-friendly technologies. Part of the understanding between the two parties included a note about BMW supplying its turbodiesel 1.6- and 2.0-liter engines to Toyota Motor Europe (TME) starting with 2014. The Verso MPV and the Avensis midsize sedan and wagon were blessed with BMW power, and now it appears the Corolla is next in line if we were to rely on reports originating from Japan.

Details are scarce at the moment of writing, but it seems the next-generation Corolla will get a BMW engine, likely reserved for the higher-spec variants. The identity of the engine(s) has not been disclosed, although the unit(s) in question might be the aforementioned diesels, or at least one of the two.

As a reminder, in January 2013 the two automakers deepened their collaboration as the two agreed to jointly develop a sports car. Due most likely by the end of 2017 or early 2018, it’s going to take the shape of a Supra revival in the case of Toyota and at the same time will also serve as a successor of the Z4 for BMW.

Such a tie-up between two very different manufacturers to share engines might seem odd, but let’s not forget Daimler has a similar partnership with the Renault-Nissan alliance from where it sources the 1.5-liter dCi powering the models part of the Mercedes A-Class family and the B-Class. The collaboration goes both ways as Nissan’s premium brand Infiniti is using some Mercedes engines.

Getting back to the Corolla, it is worth to point out the twelfth generation is going to be an all-new model taking into account it will make the switch to the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) that has underpinned the latest Prius and C-HR crossover. The world's best-selling car will make the transition towards a new iteration probably by the end of 2018.

Doesn't mean much. I'm in one of the new X1 vans right now and the 2l turbo engine in that is pretty trash.

I didn't even realize BMW was still making 1.6L diesels. I thought they had moved over completely to the 1.5L B37 three cylinder diesel. Perhaps they only continue to make them for Toyota's use.

In any case, if the Corolla does get BMW engines, it seems likely it would be just the diesels as per their other models. So we wouldn't see them in the US. It would make sense for Toyota to start using BMW gasoline engines too though, seeing as how Toyota is a bit behind the curve with turbo-charged four cylinder engines. On the other hand, while they are very reliable these days, I'm not sure if the BMW engines would meet Toyota's strict requirements in that area.

BMW already supplies Diesels for current European Toyota models so it is not something new or indeed a great issue. Get over it.

BMW is selling their engineering and technology and making money off of it. I don't think anyone really will have an issue with it... until a Toyota engine is placed in the engine bay of a BMW.

The diesels used within European Toyota models are BMWs best of the best and multi-award winning diesels.
You would never find a more competent engine.

Do you know anything about Toyota's manufacturing processes? 6 sigma implementations and the like? We had Toyota consult us at our plant. The Japanese are very strict about manufacturing. Granted, if there is a technology they are less adept in, small diesels come to mind, they will rely on a JV and so it seems BMW was choosen

But it was hilarious anyway as we all know, that Toyota wisefully decided to use BMW engines and that Toyota is obviously quite happy with their quality! So - only you seem to know, what your fancy statement shall express ...

Personally, I've had X1's for loaners (few days/weeks at a times) and found them to be surpassingly pleasant and actually fun to drive! I was constantly comparing it to a fun hatchback!

I can't speak for the European market, but in the US, BMW is perceived as a premium brand. Having a diesel or any other BMW engine in the bay of an entry level Toyota will be negatively perceived by future potential owners.

There are plenty of 3/5 series/M3 drift cars with 2JZ-GTEs in them.

Its widely accepted that the 1.8l chain driven 4 banger in the Corrolla will go 200k without so much as blinking so long as you change the oil

The rest of the car is pretty much in the same league as the engine

These cars require so little maint over their life that they are truly amazing and I'm considering buying or leasing one as a DD

Just basic transportation, underpowered but will get you there reliably day in and day out with zero fuss
