Logic Intake Installed - New Pics and commentary

I spent a few hours today to install the Logic Intake. I followed the directions to the T, but there are some aspects of the install that I found difficult and some parts where I modified.

I am not sure if there is any power but that is not the reason why I bought it. You can really hear the turbos spool, they sound awesome. Unlike my old 944 Turbo S with a K27S turbo, these little BMW snails spool quickly. You can hear the whine from a very low rpm only..... Love the sound....

For SSTT people, this intake is your saviour, you can see the TMAP sensor directly. Heck, you can plug and unplug the TMAP sensor for fun....really easy to get to. Not that I have a SSTT.

Please read the install instructions then this post.
  • My engine bay was filthy from the Kanadian Winter, I degreased and hosed it down.
  • The first really hard step is to remove the 3 wires that are attached to the stock airbox by 3 rubber mounts. You need to put your hand in there and work it out. I used needle-nose pliers to help.
  • Once you remove the cabling and loosen the air duct clamps...the air box won't move. The stock air box is mounted to the engine though 3 rubber mounts.... I took out the air filter to show you guys. You need to be firm and yank out all three mounts. Only then can the stock air box come out. This part is not in the install instructions.
  • Relocating the power steering reservoir was not a problem. But when you remove the stock bracket, it exposes 2 sharp bolts that are right by the rubber hoses. Over time, these 2 bolts will abrade these hoses! So I took the plastic standoff brackets off the stock metal bracket and clamped the 2 hoses together. Then I used the stock nuts that held the stock power steering bracket to the chassis to cover the exposed bolts.
  • Actually plugging in the intake was a challenge....the angles of the intake don't line up exactly with the plastic ducting....you will spend a bunch of time wiggling it to get into place.
  • Lastly, I didn't reinstall the snorkel, I am going to buy a 328i snorkel that seems to work better.

Thanks for the pics!

I'm going to go back and recheck my lines and see if they are close to rubbing in that area or not. I just ziptied them for time being.

How much gains do you get from these? Is the turbo spooling sound as loud as the new BMS filter??

Thanks T-bone.
I think a lot of what you said was exactly what I (and some others) added in the DIY forum, so these are clearly points/clarifications that it would be great for Helix to add to a thorough DIY/instruction sheet. Not that going online and browsing 4+ page long threads is the end of the world, but, a true detailed instruction set, printed in black and white and thrown in with the intake kit would be a beautiful thing.

For other pointers (like how to avoid the rubbing of the air hose on top of the intake, check out the DIY thread if you haven't already.

Thanks for explaining how you covered the two sharp bolts with the residual stock nuts. I wasn't that bright and just covered them with electrical tape...duh, the nuts are a lot easier and more effective.

Last comment...you are correct that the piping doesn't exactly line up with the stock hoses, but it works since they are flexible. You will notice that if/when you put the stock box back on, you have to wrestle the rear plastic hose a bit because the intake pipe's angle has "conformed" the hose to its angle now, vs what it was on the stock box. Again, not a big deal since they are flexi, but, you have to work it a bit to fit on. That, and the stock airbox front and rear tubes are much more of a PITA and a tight fit to get into the hoses than the HVI piping, because they have that little "lip" on them that you have to get finagled in there to line it up with the hose clamp ridge.

Cheers man...do you have pics of the hose rubbing on top of the intake?? I didn't see that problem and I am about to hop on a plane (and need to finish some work).

On the sharp bolts.... did you take the hose clamps off the stock powersteering bracket? You would then clamp the hoses together on top of the bolt, therefore, you have a piece of plastic that protects the hoses too.

On the UR intake, I didn't like how it hung down.... You know much water / snow we get in Toronto.

I just bought a 328 snorkel that will feed the intake cool air. I will post pics in a week or so...

Oh you will be fine for a while if you don't get to wrapping that air hose or sticking something on top of the intake pipe to protect it from wearing and rubbing. Mine was 3+ weeks and just started to have visible wear. I don't have pics, but I bet you'll see exactly what I mean when you lift it and look at where it rests on the HVI pipe. Don't sweat not getting to it for a few days while you're gone though.

For the black plastic dual hose clamp bracket (that is pushed in and snapped to the stock PS metal bracket) no, I did not yank that from the bracket and use it loose on the two hoses. Not a bad idea. Although, probably unnecessary, especially if you protect the hoses from rubbing on the exposed bolts (via the nuts or some tape or something).

Something else I forgot to mention before, as you'll see in my DIY thread post, I am one to follow the posted directions litearally (hence my pleading for Helix to really give them a thorough refresh for other hard-heads like me, down the road). So, when it mentioned removing the two plack covers and the center black piece, that's what I did...so I took off the two little covers that unclip, then unscrewed the six hex head screws holding down the pollen filter and removed it. Then, while straining and contorting to reach the back hose clamp, getting cut up to all hell and cursing up a storm, I'm wondering WHY I removed these three pieces, as this does jack to help with the install. Finally, after bleeding profusely and tearing something in my shoulder trying to get the stock box back on yesterday, I called my buddy, more or less for a second pair of hands to hold a shop-light. When he arrives he says "oh, let's just take this huge plastic shroud off". Yeah...the large 1' x 3' shroud that is SUPPOSED to be taken off, held on with two more hex screws, which then makes the install/uninstall about 100x easier. MAN there is a lot of room to work with that rear hose once you do that! Stupid finger was STILL bleeding this morning!

Nice write up!

How's the throttle response? I'd love to hear some clips of this in action.
