Rear Engine Acoustic Cover Removal Process?
Hey D Community,
First post here; in the middle of pulling intake manifold for CBU cleaning. So far biggest challenge is figuring out how to remove the subject part without destroying it. Already pulled the strut-firewall bars by removing the E socket head bolts, but it still seems to be caught between the windshield wiper cowl and intake manifold. Did a search; can't imagine nobody has had this problem before, as I found the top/main acoustic cover removal to be a cinch, and I've seen lots of questions about that. Also, this seems to be a 335d specific issue from what I can find. Thanks for any support; I'm sure it will be beneficial to others looking to do this. |

You need to remove the central firewall panel first. I've been right there in your shoes. There are (3) 10 mm screws that hold it in. It will still require a little effort but way less than if central panel were still in.

Thanks guys; the three screws (#1 in the attachment) were the ticket. I tried them earlier and didn't get much extra movement, and put them back in. So, took the three out again based upon the good input, pivoted the cover out to the left, and with some additional pulling got it to clear the intake manifold. The foam on the inside of the cover tore, but should be salvageable.
Now onto cleaning the carbon mess! |

That firewall panel was removed too right? It wasn't clear if you only removed the 3 bolts or the panel as well. When reinstalling the the intake, extra room from that firewall panel being out proved important when retorquing the 2 aft most intake runner screws.
I recall abusing the aft cover too and the foam was torn. I glued it back together somewhat. I later replaced it. One other thing I had an issue with. The aft cover is secured to these nut clips. One of the nut clips is made onto a fork like part that fits under the head of the aft intake runner screws. The fork "legs" bent out and distorted to where the clip wouldn't hold. I had to replace it and then it held correctly. I have a side by side picture of the old and new fork nut clip thing. I'll dig it up and post it. Last edited by BB_cuda; 01-01-2017 at 09:35 PM.. |

I didn't remove it. I just looked at it again after reading your post and figured it out. Hood weather strip has to be pulled away then it comes out easy. Man, thanks for asking me; this will help getting the intake back on for sure.
Thanks for the tip about the nut clip. I want to make sure I get this all back together perfect. Since it gave me so much trouble, here's a pic of that firewall panel right after pulling it out: Last edited by asdf; 01-01-2017 at 09:53 PM.. |

Here is that nut clip that slips under one of the intake runner bolts. Its either 2nd or 3rd from the back screw. Also, a side by side of the old and new aft cover. It didn't cost much so I went for it. Not sure if you can zoom in enough to see cover p/n so here is it as well.
nut clip is 11-14-7-807-251 aft cover is 11-14-7-807-246 See how the legs of the fork spread out. They should have designed an eye so it couldn't be torn up. |
