Lightbulb What Have You Done To Your BMW Lately?

Washed it, took it to the stealers for its annual inspection on the rear bumper i had fitted last year(thanks to the female who nudged me), cleaned out the cobwebs in the exhaust system on the way back.

I pulled out the cabin filter to knock out any debris: leaves, twigs. But after being replaced 4 months ago and parking near trees and shrubs, it was almost perfect.

Detailed the interior, something I do pretty regularly. Cleaning is once a month, full detail every 3-4 months.

Took it one some twisties at speeds I shall not name.

Floored it in manual shift mode when entering the freeway.

No turn signals cause BMW.

Swapped out front pads for a new set of EBC yellows in my BBK. Did the wife's GTI as well, she also runs the same pads in her BBK. It was 30f with fog/rain so decided to leave the bedding in for another day.

Man, I did that back in December. As I said before; the previous two owners did not do much as far as preventive maintenance on this little coupe and I have been un-fcuk-ing some issues. I pulled out the cabin air filter. Apparently, according to the label on the filter, it is vintage and original to the car from 2007! An avalnace of leaves fell into the floorboard and the filter looked like a diseased lung. The filter was only $12.00.

As a side note, back when I bought the car, I had to remove the air vent cowl (total PIA) and dig out a about a 1/4 of a bucket of leaves from inside the fresh air intake for the vents. Even that drain pipe was stuck like house gutters and I had to dig it out with a hanger. Previous owner said "Garage kept"

Finally put on the aftermarket steering wheel, works and looks great but the airbag light is on. Still waiting for the software to fix that.

Took the engine cover off, but ran out of energy and decided I'd do the spark plugs a different night.

So she's napping.

Replaced the Grand Touring RFTs the dealer threw on the car that had 80% tread left with Michelin Pilot Sport AS 3+ Ultra High Performance non RFTs. Couldn't be happier! What a transformation in the ride experience.

Wonder if filter is from '07 or if just a stocking info w/date more to do with application. That is scary. I also need to run the heat on high through the different vent settings to burn any moisture out of the ducts.

I also use a wet/dry vac to vacuum then blow debris from the trunk drainage areas and the engine compartment recesses near the firewall and hood hinge area, anywhere where rain and leaves can congregate.

Swapped in some new spark plugs .... didn't finish because I need a 1/4 to 1/2 driver to be able to use my torque wrench to finish the job. Today though!

Sooooooooo I'm ecstatic...

...after much reservation and careful timing I programmed comfort mode on my Z4.

What's that? Well I can now open my roof with my key!!!

Ebay Software cost $40ish

Long version of the story:

So the wifey got me a Renown steering wheel for Christmas. While installing it, I had some issues around how to make sure I didn’t get an airbag light. Once you remove the airbag, you have to use resistors on where the connections were on the original steering wheel. If not done in the right order while the battery is disconnected your car will now have an airbag light on your dash. You cannot do much but take it to a dealer or shop to have it cleared. This in itself could cost a pretty penny.

So I resorted to looking or software that might help me do this myself. I am by no means a computer or software expert, which made this all the more difficult.

The software installed nicely, easy instructions and self installing. The use of google helped me find some useful sights with regards to instructions and code breakdown (because its all in german). I tried to change my home lights as a first try. I didn’t even know that I had home lights.

I tried to change them from the low beams to the fog lights.

I processed the software and I had been only half successful which tested my nerves to say the least. The low beams were no longer home lights, but the fogs weren’t either. So thankfully I was able to revert everything back to normal and it worked as it did originally. This gave me the courage to try and work on the GM5 module KOMFORT settings which allowed me to turn a feature that was not active to active.

Held breath …wrote to the ECU…and VOILA!!! It worked.

YAY!!!
