Removing Focal ES100K tweeters from their housings

The procedure for removing Focal KRS 100 tweeters from their housing is shown HERE.

I've just received my Focal ES100K speakers and found that tweeter disassembly is a little different, so I thought I'd capture it here.

With the tweeter sat on a flat surface simply press down on the collar bearing the FOCAL logo.

This will simply unclip as shown below.

It can then be slid off the bottom of the tweeter and over the cable. The mesh grill then lifts off. Note that it's made of steel and so is quite strongly attracted to the speaker, so as you lift one side the other will get pulled back by the magnet. Just be careful not to allow it to be pulled into contact with the cone!

You'll then be left with the component parts thus. I'll be picking up the BMW E92 speaker housings tomorrow and will report back on how the tweeters fit into those.

As an aside, at this point I'm tempted to replace the wire soldered to the tweeters with the 16AWG silver plated copper that goes from the amp into the door. Not sure if it's a good idea for the sake of 6" of wire. Thoughts?

I should add that this is described in the manual that comes with the speakers. Also note that there is a collar which must be fitted to the tweeter in order to provide clearance between the diaphragm and the BMW housing.

I'm afraid it's not good news. Focal, I hope you're reading this...

The rings supplied by focal for fitting the tweeters are ID 41mm to fit snugly (more on this later) the tweeters, their OD is 44.75mm. The BMW tweeter housing has an ID of 43.8. No way would that tweeter/ring assembly fit in there no matter how much brute force and ignorance I applied.

So, 3D printer time. New ring on the left, OD 44mm, Focal ring on the right.

Second issue is that a mere press fit of the aforementioned collar just doesn't cut it. I considered a collet style collar to lock the tweeter into place once inserted into the BMW housing, but that was getting a bit fiddly. I don't intend removing these... so CA adhesive, very carefully applied to the collar before pressing the tweeter into it, ensured that collar is going nowhere.

It then snapped into place a treat.

And I now have a yellow tweeter awaiting fitting to the car.

I'm lucky to have a 3D printer to sort out such things. I think Focal need to do a little more to make life easier for us BMW owners!

Oh, and Focal, should you read this, then on a related note, please provide some decent adaptor rings for the mid-range too. The ones I had supplied with my ES100Ks (not Focal rings) were "nasty".

So, time for more ingenuity... and a wait of about 4 hours.

Fortunately Focal provide a nice gasket with the speakers, which can be seen here fitted to my design of adaptor ring before fitting the speaker.

And then bolting the speakers into place with M5 countersunk bolts, thread locked , gives a nice assembly. The patterning on the face is just due to residues of a green print done prior.

I printed a mirror image so I can choose which orientation fits best to each door.

I can sell you the design if you like Focal.

Having assembled the tweeters into the housing I'm not happy with how the foam fits in the back. The tweeter, pushed back by the collar by 5mm is a bit too deep. I see no reason for the collar to be that deep apart from that being the depth of the recess in the BMW housing for the clips to hold.

A better solution is therefore a stepped collar, most clearly shown as a CAD drawing rather than the real thing:

The 2mm deep recess, 42.2mm ID, allows the tweeter to sit 2mm deeper, and still gives the latches the required 5mm depth of collar.

Hi! Nice speaker plates!
Can I ask where did you get them?

Thanks.

Great job.
I'm about to begin a similar installation. Can I ask where you installed the crossovers and what switch settings you used in them?

I swear Focal has a whole team full of people just making tweeter cup designs. I have last year's 100KRS and the cup is completely different -- but did come with instructions on how to pop it out.

Very happy with your adapters, have no any issues to put on my BMW F10 door panel.

Here is some pic.

Dang, the F10 really has a lot more room. Wonder if you could custom fit a 3-way in there.

You mean besides his ebay listing above?

https://ebay.us/PGfOVX

As an aside, TechnicPNP also has adapter rings that are a little more universal in nature.

Garage List
I ordered steve his rings, while I thought it would fit my F48 it doesn't unfortunately. Tweeter rings fit though.

While the speakers itself for F-series and e-series are like and can be drop-in replacement. But when using these adapter one must know that E90 has speaker mounted to the doorcard and most F-series had speaker directly in the door. This means that the adapter ring should be flat on the other side than it is. Just thought to let you know.

SteveEvans If you want to adapt your design to fit for F-series. The only thing you need to do would be making the 3 mounting points level with the 4 mounting points on the other side. Like these:
