Question MAF issues typical for m57?

Hi All,
I have x35d and 335d(both 2011, I bought them both in last 6 monthes). I was really confused by fuel consumption, they are equal. I thought that 335d has some special sport software/settings and that is why 335d consumption is higher than I expected, but one day when I read the codes on the 335d I found one code related to the MAF, but after I cleared it it never came back till yesterday(was good for few monthes or so). I decided that I can replace the MAF from one car to another to check the resuls and I found that MAFs on x5 was produced in feb 2016 and on 335d in may 2013... so both my cars have already replaced by previous owners MAFs. So that is the question: is m57 MAF weak point in the intake? How many of you guys had problems with MAF? Is there some way to clean it up or fix/maintain in some way?

Thank you.

I replaced a MAF a few months ago. It maybe a wire in the harness too. What codes did you get? You can find brand new Bosch units on ebay for $130.

Do you recall who was selling at $130? Looks like $200 is the new normal.

Thanks!

$200 for Bosch from Rockauto, Id imagine if youre finding one on ebay that is $70 less than rockauto its either an el-cheapo MAF or its used.

To answer the OP's question, MAF sensor seem to be pretty fragile in any vehicle that uses them. They often seem to be the first sensor to fail. You can try spraying it with MAF/electronic parts cleaner to extend it life. That may or may not work depending on what has caused the failure.

I had a MAF failure in mine as well. I tried cleaning it with MAF cleaner and that did not work. Surprisingly it wasn't dirty at all so I doubt that was the issue. I replaced mine at 110k miles and I'm pushing 126k now with no other issues.

Bosch PN is 0281006147. They are not $130 low, but on Amazon, you can find them about $20 cheaper than ECS or FCP. My original has failed after 140K of service, and it was partly because of my cleaning. What has failed is a temp sensor within, based on the logs that I took.

My original MAF was on its way out last year throwing codes. I bought a new Bosch from FCP, installed, and everything went away. Been running great ever since.

Good knowledge. News to me that the temperature sensor was a part of the MAF part.

That appears to what has happened here as well. At 80K miles. And, as the second owner, I can see the first owner had replaced the sensor at least once previously.

I am getting better at doing diagnostics with the Schwaben Foxwell scanner. That was not in the plans ;-)

Did you get any 'check engine light' or error code for that failed MAF sensor?

I only got check engine light at high load high rpm. Putting around the city did not do it.
