Dinan Response regarding Flash for March '08-future builds

From Dinan:

Quote:
"Currently, Dinan software is applicable for vehicles equipped with the MSD v80.0 DME (engine management computer). Vehicles equipped with the MSD v81.0 DME are not yet supported. For the most part, the production date break appears to be 3/08, however this is not an absolute so it is best to check the DME label."

How come all the changes always occur in march? Oil cooler last year, DME, this year, facelift next year?

Good point, maybe the end period of manufacturing runs.

Great intel, Bubbles! I talked to my Dinan dealer and they were not aware of this issues as of Tuesday.

I guess I lucked out with my late Feb. 08 build...car was flashed within 24 hrs of delivery, couldn't be happier with the Dinan set-up.

So this is a hardware change only affecting cars built after Mar '08 or is it a software change too affecting pre-Mar '08 cars (when they are taken in for service)?

For purely selfish reasons, if it is only a go-forward problem only (making post Mar '08 cars untunable and leaving us alone) it's not a bad thing for us current owners - our resale value just went up.

I know the reason... read below a thread from Terry on www.n54tech.com:

Hey guys,

I've been working closely with one of my European distributors and we have confirmed BMW did in fact add 'tuning protection' to the new ECU code. It seems to have happened in middle to late March production dates.

From what I know right now this update will detect any and all currently available piggyback systems and tuners, although there is a chance the JB1 is not effected. When the fault code is thrown it is stored in the extended set and it may or may not throw a limp condition. I don't want to release any technical information because I see this as somewhat of an opportunity to beat the competition to market with a solution. But this will definitely ruin a few peoples days.

There is a lot I don't know. I don't yet know if they plan to release this to all cars as they go in for oil changes, or if it will only effect new production build cars. I also don't know the production dates and when/if this will be hitting the US market.

We've all been hearing rumors and I now know there is some truth to them. May want to hold off on progman updates...

Only a hardware change, not a software change. '07 cars WILL NOT be affected when taken in for service. Also, a majority of the '08 cars up until March will be just fine too.

Maybe, maybe not. Dinan has been around for over 20 years, and I doubt anyone here has followed their relationship with BMW for that long. This situation might not be a blip on the radar in the grand scheme of things.

That's wrong. It is a hardware change in the DME. The production break is right around 03/08. So even some '08s have the older version of the DME. Cars with the previous DME can still have the current flash, and there can be no software uploaded onto it that will prevent the current flash from working.

Dinan is working on a flash version for the new ECU/DME.

Yep!

I am sure all of the tuners affected by the new DME will find a solution as well.

Not yet. Not that Jeff is the one who is wrong on this one, I am having a hard time buying into that.
