Exclamation SCARFACE Remake: Summer 2018!

UNIVERSAL has confirmed a August 2018 release date and it is set to begin filming anytime now. I have anxiously been awaiting this. I feel with the huge advancements in cinematography, technology, great writers, producers, directors and actors, this legendary film could get a new life. Not to mention the new cars, homes, gear, etc. And none other than the Cohen Brothers: No Country For Old Men, True Grit, Fargo, The Big Lebowski are producing! The Wolf of Wall Street, Terence Winter is penning the script.

Diego Luna will take on the iconic lead role! I have seen him in plenty of Spanish and American films and he is a fantastic actor!

Sure thing.

Of more notable interest, the storyline will have it's own original twist:

Diego will play a Mexican born immigrant who moves to Los Angeles.

Definitely like where this is going...

With the team Universal has assembled, I am confident this film will be greatness. But I agree, the 80's version (because there was one even before Pacino!) is nothing short of movie legend!

Hmm, that seems like a pretty big difference in storyline.

yeah I agree.

It would have been great to see a story where Tonys son comes in for revenge...

Not at all.

The 80s film can easily be redone with this story and made almost identical!

What is the difference between a broke yet inspiring to be more, Cuban now Mexican immigrant moving to Miami now LA - Working for a local Drug Dealer - Who answers to a Drug Lord in Mexico or South America - Rising up the ranks to be "The Man" - Taking said Drug Dealers girl to be his own - And every other storyline from that film? That is easy peezy lemon squeezy stuff. I actually prefer and am even more excited to see it now. Why remake it tit for tat?
I have tons of faith in the Cohen Bros and Universal. Everyone on earth realizes how epic and legendary that film was. This remake will be just as if not more Epic... Just watch.

You take an already great concept and add just enough of your own originality to make a classic a modern day hit!

The Mariel boatlift was a pretty significant event in South Florida and, at least in my opinion, pretty integral to the storyline. Aside from that, the original did a phenomenal job portraying what was going on in a particular place at a particular time. I'm sure you can make a movie about someone coming from somewhere else to another city, but it seems like it would be a different movie, not a remake of the original. Sort of like someone remaking The Godfather with the Russian mob living in Chicago. Might be a good movie in its own right but wouldn't be a remake of The Godfather.

Gotta say. Kinda sick of hispanics being portrayed as thugs and drug dealers.

And sick of reboots.

Exactly. All the events in Florida were occurring and they insert fiction into fact. Even Tony's financial rise wa based on the factual cocaine boom that happened in South Florida. I really hoped his one wouldn't come out to be honest. Understandably, the Scarface concept from the original is simply that a young up and comer makes good and falls to his hubris. I worry that this one will somehow become overly political. It could simply end up as anothe Mexico Cartel movie.

Meh, and it will most likely be terrible.

Hollywood hasn't had an original idea since Back to the Future.

I feel like some movies just aren't meant to be remade...

This is one... For the third time apparently...

I couldn't imagine watching a remake of Shawshank, Good Fellas, and Die Hard - just to name a few off the top of my head... Just as clearly as I can imagine the cringe/groan I will undoubtedly have when Luna says - "Say hello to my lil friend..."

Fair enough but the true original was made 50 years earlier and I think most people today think of the Pacino version when thinking of Scarface. Importantly, both the 1930s version and the 1980s version were set in a location and in the context of something very significant that was happening in a distinct period of time - i.e. prohibition / Chicago mob wars and Mariel boatlift / explosion of cocaine trafficking in Miami. Changing it to someone coming from Mexico to sell drugs in L.A. seems to lose that period relevance effect that, at least in my opinion, is critical to the movie.

Don't get me wrong - I'll see it, but just curious about how they overcome that change and avoid making another generic drug dealer movie, since there are plenty of those already. We'll see.

Let's be real though... wasn't Blow already a pseudo-Scarface-reboot? I mean the storyline was a little different but how many of these movies do we need? Guy starts from nothing selling drugs, guys builds empire, guy meets hot girl and has kids (unless she is "so polluted" lol), shit gets a little crazy, girl leaves, empire collapses and guy dies or goes to jail.

There's only downside risk here and it will never be as gritty as the 1983 film (didn't Oliver Stone find himself addicted to coke after doing "research" for the screenplay?). What role is Kevin Hart gonna play?

As a funny aside, on the 20th anniversary they put the movie back into select theaters. The closest to me was the AMC in Times Square. Needless to say, they could have turned off the sound because it was me, my cousin, and about 500 guys in white t-shirts with flat brimmed Yankee hats literally reciting aloud each and every line of the movie.
