ZHP w/ uprated turbo for 2009?
Today on Bimmerfile.com:
Mechanically expect the biggest news to come from a new optional DCT (dual clutch transmission) and a special sport model similar to the ZHP package offered on the E46. It’s this sport model that could see the debut of an up-rated 3.0L turbo that currently powers the 335i. |

I could have perfect timing if this is true for '09, since I'll be in an '09 335i in ~ 11 months (and yes, I would definitely get the DCT tranny ). However, the last news I saw on this was that any major mechanical changes/upgrades on the 335i wouldn't be available until MY 2010 or 2011...so, we'll just have to see what actually materializes.

I think you are misinterpreting this. It will be an uprated twin turbo 3L engine, not new turbos. In other words it will be rated 355 HP but will be the same N54 engine in our cars which with our tunes is already making much more power than this "ZSP" version will.

The exact same way my "same N54 engine" now makes 385 rwhp. It obviously wouldn't take much for BMW to turn the "same N54 engine" up a little bit.

More Boost. It's not real complicated, notice all the Dinan, SSTT, PROcede and JB2 threads? It has already been well documented there will be a 355 crank HP version of the 335i and 135i (up from 306 so a pretty significant gain) but again it will be the same 3L N54 with the same mitsu turbos.

not to take this off topic but maybe this is why bmw changed the ecu's to try to prevent tunes. now people wont buy the 335 they'll just get a "ZHP 335i".
makes sense no?

Actually, yes it does. Folks were focusing in on cutting into M3 sales but I think you are right, it is probably ZSP sales they are thinking about. They can make a bigger profit on a couple of inexpensive cosmetic upgrades, and maybe slightly better brakes and suspension, plus a no cost to them different tune, and they can charge you an extra 7-8K for the package. But not as many people will buy it if you can add a JB2H for 400.00 and make more power than their ZSP.

It would be very unlikely that BMW only changes the ECU software. Normally they cange the spare part number of the engine block as well, etc., etc. However, how important the changes are they apply, would be worth a different discussion. I'm curious what they will do with the 6AT tranny.

DCT will be nice, but if they're going to turn the wick up on the power, a LSD would also be sweet.
I don't buy into the argument that 335 sales are cutting into M3 sales. I think BMW AG sees the potential for profiting from platforms with the N54 engine, and have changed to the Siemens MSD v81 ECU in order to better control who profits from adding performance to this engine.

The steptronic (with torque converter) will still give you the most powerful launch with boost...without the expense of heating up and wearing out clutch plates.

even better than the new tranny coming out (dual clutch)? I remember BMW saying that the ZF tranny thats in the 335i right now is a really good trans.

The DCT should shift consistently faster than the steptronic unit. We'll have to wait until we see it to see how it does on launches.

yeah I would assume it shifts faster since it has the next gear ready. I wonder what down shifting will be like?

btw -- here's the article the OP is referring to: http://www.bimmerfile.com/2008/04/19...pdated-idrive/ I'm actually excited about an improved iDrive (not that I have any difficulties whatsoever with the current iDrive).
