320d N47 177bhp cold start issues

Morning all
My car is a 2008 320d with 113k manual.
I've had a few issues with my 320d as late
Cold start is quite lumpy and smokey
Mpg seems bad.
After about a minute it seems to run ok.
Plugged my Carly in and found glowplug 1 defective.
Changed all the glowplugs and glowplug control module yesterday and this morning no glow plug symbol appeared on the dash for a few seconds when turning the ignition on like it should when it's cold like last night.
The same issues still persist!!

The previous owner said he had the dpf deleted and had the swirl flaps deleted.
Supposedly it's been mapped but he said it wasn't live mapped.
I can't see that it's been mapped as it feels standard to me.

Could this be a bad map?
Injectors?
Or something else that I haven't addressed yet?

I have the same engine, the only time I had a lumpy cold start was when the engine temp sensor was on it's way out. A failing sensor should give a plausibility error though.

I doubt it's the injectors, they seem quite reliable on this engine.

I was going to suggest you try and revert to a stock map but that won't help if the DPF has been removed. Mine's remapped with a Bluefin.

Edit: One more thing to check, I remember having a boost leak (and poor MPG), the culprit was one of the o-rings that fits on the pipe between the cylinder head and the inlet manifold. Parts 7 & 8 in the following pic

Might be worth checking all seals from the turbo onwards.

Thanks I will see what I can find.

I really think who ever mapped out the dpf with a genetic map has not done the car any favours. Could this be a possibility?

It's certainly possible. Do you know who did the map?

How long have you had the car? If the rough running issues have only just started then it might not be the map.

I think the first thing to check would be for boost leaks, any boost leak is most likely to be a result of perished seals, especially on a 9 year old car.

For the engine temp sensor (which plays a very important function) you can check the reading in the hidden menu on the dash.

Here's a youtube vid of my engine temp sensor playing up!

I've only had it just over a month and I noticed it the next day. Lots of people have said it's quite normal but normal to me is it running correctly and I can't just put up with it I need to sort it lol.
I'll check the temp again. I tried it the other day and it showed 88.

88 is a good temp and if it doesn't fluctuate wildly then it's probably not the temp sensor.

Personally I'd try and get hold of a 2nd hand DPF, then revert the map back to stock so that you're working from a clean sheet.
