The 15W oil kinematic viscosity is too high for cold start.
BMW LL-O4 has a 0W or 5W recommendation. Interested to know where you obtained the information about using 15W? |

I don't have an answer, amigo, but can tell you a story about my old '71 2002. Toward the end of its lifetime with me, at around 90k miles when I was stationed in Germany, I ran 40W Quaker State Racing Oil and a can of STP to keep the oil pressure up high enough. But it had been abused (unintentionally) by my ex when we swapped cars one long weekend and she didn't notice the oil level was way down.

If you are low on oil and have no choice...Yes!
However, mixing types of oils and weights is bad practice....Period! I see this a lot in my business all the time... "I want to run thicker oil to help prevent wear, etc..." Or what ever idea they have in there head at the time. 3 points... 1)Running thicker oil does not allow the same sort of protection on bearing surfaces that oem specifications does. This isnt some sloppy v8 from the 80's etc.. Number one chance of wear in an engine is on engine start up, thicker oil more time to hit the bearings etc, I see oil sample results all the time with my business, including these engines. If you are going to modify oil specifications it should be done with an oil sample analysis during changes... Best way to monitor how the oil is treating your engine. .. Pouring some oil in you heard might work well is like driving around aimlessly trying to find a destination. You need a map!! ....The science does not back up the claims most "experts" and I use that term lightly propose it will. 2) When an oem design the engine they give the engine oil manufacturers a list of things they want... Durability, wear life, protection parameters, low ash content etc.. Then its up to the oil manufacturers to produce an oil that meets all those parameters. 15/w40 pretty much without a doubt will not match bmw oem spec....Just saying! 3) OIL IS CHEAP!!!!!! WHATS NOT CHEAP????? ENGINES!!!!!! That is all

Many M gas bmw's spec 10w-60 which has a cst of around 160-175 @ 40°C depending on brand. Redline's 5w-40 and 15w-40 diesel oils have the same cst of 97 @ 40°C. Hard to say a certain oil is junk without data in the discussion.
