Notice of Recall HPFP

Today, I received a call from my local BMW dealership advising me that there is a recall on my HP pump and requesting a date when I could bring in the car to have it replaced. My build date is 10/06. I have had no pump problems at all and am not sure I want the techs in my engine bay. I would rather wait for the thing to fail if it is going to. I have about 14,800 miles on the car and it is running fine. Anyone else get a call like this?

Edit: One more thing, the service rep said the car would have to be "reprogrammed." I wonder why if the pump is simply being replaced? It is the same pump functioning doing the same stuff. I am fearful about receiving the progman that has the new piggyback countermeasures.

The ECU will have to be reprogrammed. Those who had the original problem before the recall also had to have the update to see if it fixed it but then it didn't, so they replaced a HPFP. If yours shows any signs whatsoever of failure I would get the HPFP ASAP.

Is this for all 335i's? or just the ones built early like yours?

I think this is for specific models. Theres a thread with the Service Bulletin inside.

If your fuel pump is fine, then don't do it. What are they going to do? Void your warranty? lol

Even if they call me, I have no intention of going there. Cars running strong. No problems.

that SIB is retarded, cars that was produced after those dates failed more than those that fell in between...

there is some ambiguity with it, from the wording I think it says the date of engine production, which is well before the actual production date (they put 5000 miles on it for you!). My chassis code falls right at the beginning and I have an 11/06 production date.

Yeah, it seems like the dates for the recall are very close to arbitrary. I really don't want them touching my engine!! I can imagine them removing my perfectly good pump and replacing it with one that shits out in a couple months, like what happened to those who had the pump replaced 2 or 3 times, only to be substituted for another defective pump. Mine thus far is perfectly good.

I haven't received this call yet, I hope I don't. In the Service Bulliton it says they are to do it next time car is in for service or if there is any sign of failure. I wonder if your dealer is being proactive because work is slow so he is trying to drum up some business?

I did an ED on my e90 Sedan in Oct of 06 so I am probably in the recall, but like yours, my HPFP has had no problems and I'm over 21K on the Odometer.

I think BMW is finally narrowing down certain builds of the pumps and chassis builds, I'm sure nearly all of the Siemens pumps will be recalled at some point.

I think this is a proactive movement from BMWNA to an incident that caused an accident due to the FP failing. Since then, a member has taken initiative to alert the DOT (dept. of Transportation) and many have responded with their failure experience. I submitted my experience on my old 07 335i that had a failing fuel pump and the DOT contacted me for more info and I supplied them with it. I believe that BMW is now responding to this by replacing faulty pumps and any that may be faulty.

My car just went thru the proccess since the HPFP went bad...dont wait until it goes bad, your car will get into LIMP Mode and it will become real weak.

they reprogrammed the ECU and it feels fine.....the only thing was to take out my AA XEDE....and now putting it back.

PS.

Mine also is 10/06 production and the guy just ordered the oil cooler upgrade....

I got a new HPFP and software update as well (Progman 29.x, I think). My old fuel pump, at 31k miles, never gave me any trouble. And the new update, if anything, made the car drive even smoother than before. The only problem is the sunroof which now doesn't want to open up. Back to the dealer I go!

Crap... felt some loss of power tonight. Looks like the fuel pump may be going out again *sigh*.

How long did it take for them to put in the fuel pump and update software?

Exactly. Unless they're actually putting in a HPFP with an improved design, there's no point. There are posts all over the forum from people with 2008 vehicles with failed HPFPs. I don't think anyone had confirmed that the pumps BMW's been installing to replace the failed pumps are any different. Considering that some people are on their third or fouth pump, I think it's safe to say that they're the same.

I would be awfully pissed off if I had a trouble free pump for 23K miles, took it in to have the pump replaced because of the SIB and that pump failed shortly thereafter...

+1,000,000. I have 21,xxx miles on my car now and is still on the original pump. I've never read one single reliable source that states the pump has been fixed. So if they take out my pump, put a re manufactured one in and it dies in 500 miles, I'll be extremely mad.
