Auto transmission front seal leak?
So a few months ago I had BMW do a cooling system flush. They told me I may need an oil pan gasket soon. Car has 93000 miles. I went underneath and saw a drop sitting where trans and motor meet. It did look like motor oil. but may have been a combination of both oil and trans fluid or just dirty trans fluid. I didn't think trans at the time. I did a trans fluid flush last week and have been under the car to check for leaks and have noticed that the fluid that was present on the bottom of the trans/motor area, that I thought was oil...I can see now it is red...now that it is fresh. There was no smell at the time, before the fluid change. When I drained it, I noticed it didn't really have much of an odor. The new Redline fluid I used stinks like crazy, and that is probably why I am smelling the fluid at times now and not before when the leak was present. this leak was probably trans fluid all along and never motor oil.
Anyway I am thinking this may be the trans front shaft seal and I'm not happy. Any input on what I might pay at BMW or an INDY would be great. Thanks! Last edited by Bigrob126; 03-27-2017 at 11:32 PM.. |

So I brought my car to a very known and reputable European car tech here in Vegas. They told me the leak IS actually my oil pan! I KNOW when I checked under there I saw red fluid on the 2 back bolts of the oil pan. Maybe it had splashed there when I dropped the tranny pan and didn't clean it off? I had gotten back down there the next day to check. I am miffed Anyway, I had them do the gasket. But I still smell the transmission fluid faintly when I am sitting still at a light through the fresh air vent. I don't know why. I was rather sloppy when I did the trans fluid, maybe some got in places that I cant see to clean up, and that's what I am smelling? It does seem to have gotten less and less though.....the smell of the fluid I mean.
