How can I get to the CAN bus?

My buddy was able to get a hold of a CAN bus protocol analyzer. Wanted to connect this to a CAN in my car and see what I can read.

Can anyone give me pointers on how/where I can access the buses in my e90? How many are there? What CAN standard are they following?

I tired to do a search but the word "CAN" is just hard to look for

you will see a square wave signal... nothing special about it... if nothing is wrong with the car, leave it alone

It is located underneath the drivers footwell. Take off the cover (3 hex screws) and then it is in the front left of center. Looks like a black box about the size of a cable modem/router. However, I agree dont F*@% with it if you don't know what to do. It is one of the few main "brains" of the car and the integrated systems in the car.
