Aus Time to Speed Warz

So, how quick is your N54/N55? With everybody spread all over Aus how can we measure to other cars and did the last $$ upgrade actually improve performance?

From the Frankenturbo post on the N54 Turbo engine... forum the Audi B5 2.7 twin turbo platform used a time to speed calculation called FATS "For the Advancement of The S4". I don't think it translates well (FATN) to our cars so maybe best to leave as FATS.

The idea is to calculate the time your car takes from 4,200rpm to 6,500rp in 3rd gear. If your car is producing more power the time should reduce, nice and simple and if you already have a 3rd gear log in Datazap you can get started straight away.

Most of the sorted cars will struggle to not spin the tyres on a flat smooth road in 2nd gear, so 3rd gear is the gear of choice to ensure it hooks. This means 175 ish, so be safe and get down to your local dragstrip, airstrip or private road. Down hill or down wind try to do two runs each way and average. Honour system so keep it fair and sleep well at night.

MHD log has the time and RPM info you need. Plug the info into the online spreadsheet below. (If this is not working for JB, Cobb, Vishnu etc users let me know and I will modify the spreadsheet.)

Maybe this will spark some forum activity and help some of the guys in remote locations post how quick they can wind it out in 3rd. This should also help new owners to see how their car is performing and if not close, seek mechanical help sooner rather than later.

Over to the Forum to see if any interest and if popular I will attempt to keep a summary of quick times with - username - FATS time - post number to help navigating through thread.

If enough posts I will seperate into different chassis engine classes, so 135, 535 etc more than welcome. If you also have a quick other car and can log the time plus rpm in 3rd post it up for comparison - R32 GTR, C63s, GT3RS, LP700-4..... This would be a seperate list.

Spreadsheet is Google Docs and will work in your web browser, however if two people are using it at the same time you will both adjust the spreadsheet so best to download and use it on your PC.

Click here for the FATS spreadsheet

Enter log time as close as possible under 2,400rpm and close as possible above 2,400rpm same for 6,500rpm. Spreadsheet will interpolate the times and calculate your FATS.

To get things started and for reference the Frankenturbo shop E92 Manual FATS times below:

6.67 - Stock car 8psi - (long road needed) Link
4.29 - JB4 Map 1, 14psi
3.98 - JB4 Map 2, 18psi
2.90 - JB4Map 6, MHD BEF, Stage 1 Hybrids, E85, Meth, DP's, Inlets, 22psi Link
2.47 - Frankenturbo Beta Hybrids, E85 and Meth - Link

Would be cool to see some of the regular forum members numbers - Socket - Hybrids & ST, VTL, Dr J, EB89, Dat335, MJ80, Brule, Bradsm87, CUB, Rube's, Martymill, Ink,

2nd Post will have summary of quickest times

Great idea. I haven't been on the forums for ages now due to car being constantly off the road. Had a deposit down for a bottom mount big single kit to be developed (same one as socket) but I have some bad news.

My car got written off by a large parts of a tree falling on it whilst parked during the Sydney Storms at Hills (shameless plug to a great bunch of guys who are far more qualified than some other well known workshops around)

So it's time to leave the platform and wish everyone good luck! Look out for an epic part out in a couple of months time

Any chance of a pre Gum Tree 3rd gear log and FATS time for the vert, I assume it would be a quick one? All the best with the next platform, C63?

I like it! I guess it doesn't paint the full picture because some setups are super responsive and hauling from 2500 where as others aren't on song till 4000 and this test wouldn't differentiate between those. Same goes for top-end past 6500.

I'm 2.95 seconds according to my most recent log on a flat road. That's about what I expect on about 16psi. Hopefully one day if I get my diff back, I can do some 18psi runs with the new charge pipe and a bit more ethanol %!

Once you get yours all sorted, you will be quicker. A real cold winter would help. But I guess there is no such thing in Darwin.

3.08 diff will do that when comparing to someone with a 3.46 in same gear. It doesn't mean your car is slower when you average it out running through multiple gears. I got same time as you but I know full well your car is much faster than mine.

The manual transmission has different gear ratios to the auto so the final drive is matched to suit it. 3rd gear in auto is pretty much the same as 3rd gear in the manual

MT and AT aren't comparable using this test. The 3rd ratios are very similar but the stock diff ratios aren't.

Edit: vtl bet me to it.

Thanks VTL, Is this the same for DCT 335's as well? 3rd gear pretty much the same as manual/steptronic?

Do you feel rear tyre diameter will be the one to hurt/help times for cars with similar mods?

If You enter the correct data into virtual dyno You get a clear picture.
You can use a dyno once then calibrate it to VD.

You can enter all your particulars on VD.

Problem is some logs are just dropped in and have 700hp cause there's no parameters set.

We can include 320ds however rpm band may need to be adjusted, are you guys redlining before we start at 4,200rpm? Would be interesting to see stock vs JB diesel and other tuning box's. Also 335Ds

Post up RPM band and I can adjust the spreadsheet. Can you guys log time and rpm - Bavarian Technic cable?

Righto, worked it out eventually lol. Little suprised by this time, must be the dct making it look flattering ? No ethanol, no intake, a boost leak and pretty hot at 27c...

We should also add the fueling to the quick times and not justwether stock turbos or not.

Other - My car was running like shit here and has a boost leak so im a little surprised by a seemingly alright time ? Perhaps this is due to the DCT mucking up the ratios ? The car wasn't well here and i was taking these logs to troubleshoot. None of my other logs actually hit 6500 so this was all i got.
