BMW - America's Cup & i3

In Bermuda and saw the Oracle America's Cup Team USA yacht (and Uk, Japan & France). Here is a shot of the US with BMW sponsorship and the 'fleet' (pun intended) of i3's outside in the Dockyards!

Then we got the ferry back and were followed back... realised that the Governor was across from us as he got into his official vehicle! Yep 7 series!

Have loved America's Cup racing for many years. The venerable 12 Meter was my favorite, so graceful and beautiful. But up on a foil at 50 MPH sounds like a thrill I would love to experience!

I videoed a short time of Team USA the speed from nowhere is amazing and then turns on a dime. Truly impressive.

When they developed the first trimaran, Oracle Team USA was based in San Diego and did most of their testing here. Their trimaran was docked next to a popular seafood restaurant in Seaport Village and you could go and have lunch and watch them working on the boat. Watching them leave port and head out into the open ocean was incredible!

I attended a tech briefing/Q&A held at the San Diego Yacht Club and the most astonishing thing that I learned that was that they could sail at a factor of 2-3 times wind speed, moving apparent wind forward, and at all points of sail they were effectively going to weather! It boggles my mind!

I had a Hobie 16 when I lived in Michigan and a Hobie 18 after I moved to San Diego, so catamarans/trimarans have a soft space in my heart. Sailing the Hobie 16, with 2 people completely hiked out on the trapeze and with the windward hull just above the water was a thrill that I'll never forget!

That's very cool , seeing these fly is amazing. I have had the chance to do 2 days on a BT Global Challenge yacht twice. 67 and 69 foot. They move but nothing like these. Love being out on the water.
