N55 Fuel injector gone bad - $3,000?

Hi everyone. I have a 2011 335i convertible (N55 engine) with 67,500 miles. Recently, 1 hour into a spirited drive with auto in manual mode and revs around 4000 RPM, the service engine soon light came on along with that half black/orange motor symbol. In park the engine would shake the car on revving. Turned off car for 15 minutes and car was fine. Brought it into an indy shop specializing in BMW, Audi & Porsche. Mechanic computer scanned and measured values to find that #6 injector’s is failing with higher resistance than rest. Rather than replacing a single bad injector, he says that all 6 injectors have to be replaced together – despite the other 5 being good - because they work together via computer. Cost of replacing all 6 injectors is $3000 +. At this point all we did was replace the spark plugs. He said I will have to do the work soon as this misfiring & engine shaking will get worse. So is this mechanic correct? Do I really have to replace all 6 together instead of just the bad injector? $3,000? I’d appreciate your input on this….

replace all 6 injectors? $3000????

run. run far, far away from this mechanic. replace just that one injector to begin with because your symptoms sound more like an ignition coil issue rather then injector.

good you replaced the spark plugs, but I really hope you paid absolue max $150 for installation and everything. they will be old and worn at 60k miles and will start wearing out your ignition coils quickly. do not ever come back to this mechanic.

On my N54, 2 injectors went bad in 2015. Had CEL, scanned the car with Rheingold, and was confirmed. On the N54 engine the injectors are indexed. Old injectors had index from 1 to 9. New injectors from 10 to in my case 12. Not sure if there are newer iterations. But one could not mix old indexes with new indexes.
So I had to get 6 new index 12 injectors because mine were index 9. Got them for cheap (original BMW made in Italy) from Rockauto. They were around 115 $/piece.
Swapping them is not a bad job if you DIY, but you have to make sure you meet the torque values, because you can do/undo those nuts on the fuel line only so many times (as per TIS). Also, you need to write down the numbers found on the injectors to be able to code them once they are swapped. there are some very good DIY in the DIY forum and N54tech forum if you google/search. Use realoem to find your exact injectors and start shopping. If you have the skills and are confident enough you can do it, it will save you probably over 2 grand to what you were quoted.

That's probably the most absurd price I've ever heard for replacing fuel injectors. Good God.

$3,000?????, tell him to suck your dick and be sure to gargle. All six injectors wouldn't even amount to $1,000 in parts alone..run away. Run far away.

Also, one can replace only the malfunctioning injector, as long as the person above me said, they're of comparable index.

Please post the name of this place, just on the off chance that some naive soul doing some searching might come across this & won't be suckered into such a scam-mine of a place. You'd be doing a great community service to avoid this crook in sheep's clothing.

One note on this. My understanding is you cannot mix index 0-9 with index 10-12 on the same bank. So you could swap all injectors on cylinders 1-3, while leaving the old index injectors on cylinders 4-6.

I have no idea if N55s have a similar situation. I doubt it. I suspect this is one of the items that was changed on the N55. Never looked because I have an N54.

One way or the other 3k seems outrageous. You can get Bosch injectors from rockauto for 84 bucks a piece.

I paid him $456 for replacing the spark plugs. I got a few other quotes for about $260-$290. But I paid this guy because he's a BMW specialist and wanted him to check out what is causing the issue. He also said that my HPFP is on the low side of normal at 45. It will probably go out sometime in the future. BTW, after I got the car back, the engine service soon light came on. Now the car is constantly jerking, shaking and stumbling and rumbling. :-(

A place in Culver City called Euro-Tech. They are Porsche, BMW & Audi specialists. He told me that I may have another 6K miles before I absolutely had to do the work. But 5 minutes after I left his shop, the service engine soon light came and has been on since. And the car is driving much worse than before I took it to him.... jerking, stumbling, rumbling, and shaking. I have to feather the throttle to keep the jerking and shaking from getting worse.

Will these cheap Rockauto injectors work a well as the DFI OEMs?

I would keep looking until you find OEM replacements for a reasonable price.

also.. try swapping ignition coils and make sure that is not your issue. your problem sounds more like a coil then injectors. you can easily swap them and get the car scanned to see if you did in fact transfer the faulty ignition coil to a different cylinder.

good luck

No idea. I generally trust Bosch products. Not sure who makes the OEM injectors for BMW. But you can get six bosch injectors for less than two OEM injectors.

Just took a look at FCPEuro. The OEM injectors are 325 a pop. Not cheap.

seems like two injector revisions, one manufactured upto 12/31/2010 and after

$85 at rockauto per. From what I understand these injectors are much simpler than those on the N54 engines and should be a lot less labor to install / code (if it needs coding at all like the n54 injectors).

Oh shit, you're in LA. Take your car to my trusted Indy shop off Olympic and Barrington. They're called "Westwood Auto", right across from Ralphs and adjacent to a 7/11, ask for Derrick and or Kenny. Kenny's the owner and Derrick's the main mechanic. They'll have you squared away immediately at an honest price.

Tell them ***** (white 335i) sent you! They take amazing care of me and they're good, honest people. All work on my car has been done through them! If you're going there, I can text Derrick ahead of time to let him know what the issue is and get help as soon as you're there.

Wow... $100 only for labor? That's it? The repair guy was telling me that the manifold needed to be taken off and it's very extensive work.

Also, I just looked at the link. It says it's for cars manufactured 1/11. My car is a 2011 but it was manufactured in late 2010 and delivered 10/10. Do they just say 1/11 to refer to 2011 models or are they specifically excluding earlier 2011 models?
