Help - car starts then turns off (loud noises)
Hi All,
I just purchased a 2012 335i M Sport. When i took it home and drove it the next morning, i turned on the ignition and it was fine, then a few seconds later the RPM when up and down a few times and car shook and ignition turned off. This also happens if i change from drive to reverse (opposite too). The seller told me that he took out the governor and the car is just trying to match the RPM so i have to push the gas peddle when i start it for a few seconds until the engine is ready. Does this sound correct? He says that bmw thinks theres a governor so its trying to stabilize but the governor is removed so it is lowering the RPM. I feel like if a good tool was used to removed the governor the car wouldnt do this. Anyways can someone help me i just bought it couple days ago so i want to go back if this is not correct. If this is what could be the issue, is there a tune i can do that doesnt cause this issue, or re add the governor and then get a better tune without this problem ? Thank you All! |

I honestly have no clue what governor he could be talking about. Did he give you any other information about what exactly he did? Did this not happen on the test drive before you bought it?

We can't help you unless you pull the codes. Sounds like it could be a bad fuel pump.

Either he doesn't know what he is talking about or it is a line of crap. My guess is he knew there was a problem and was just trying to get rid of the car.

I would order up a Carly diagnostic tool from Amazon and then buy the app on your phone. It will give you all the codes and you get to keep it for the future.

Okay just put a order in for the Carly, ill take a look at it. Because when i had an e60 before this, it did the same when the transmission was failing so i replaced one of the silanoids and it fixed the issue. Lets hope this guy knew what he was saying haha!

My guess is that your valvetronic servo motor is taking a crap. The symptoms you state are identical to what I experienced. Loss of power jumping rpms also the vehicle will turn off. Sometimes you will find oil seeping through the motor and will cause erratic symptoms. Guessing you have an n55. Unlike the n52 that uses a separate vvt motor and eccentric shaft sensor Our n55s have the eccentric shaft sensor and motor all one part. Have the codes pulled like everyone stated. Usually you will see a fault for valvetronic motor adjustment. Let me know what you find will be glad to help out.

Governor.. honestly what crock of s... is that guy on?
These engines dont have a physically removable governor. The idle speed is adjustable. You can adjust the base idle and idle boost with AC on, low battery voltage etc. Apart from the cold start stall, does the car otherwise run ok? To me it sounds like the DME software has been modified to disable to cold start fast idle/cat warming enrichment. |

Honestly, what in the world are you smoking? You just bought a car and not even 24 hours after there's a fairly significant problem? Take the fucking car back and have them figure it out, on their time, at their expense--not yours.
Clearly this isn't normal behavior for any car. Force them to fix the car or get your money back and find another 335i. You live in CA, we have one of the best Lemon Laws in the country. Even more so, I'm pretty sure every car bought from a dealer (within CA at least) has a 14-30 day or 1,000 miles warranty. Utilize it, don't get stuck with a POS. With that said, especially considering that sorry ass excuse the dude gave you over the phone, I'd take the car back, demand a refund of your money and find another 335i from a different dealer. This place clearly doesn't deserve a penny if they can conjure up a lie to you like. "We removed the governor...", lmaoooooo, just when you thought you've seen it all before. |

Thank you all for the help, So the intercooler had giant hole (replaced with VSRF intercooler) The oil had not been changed for like 16k + miles, so i was running on topped off oil and there was a oil leak from gasket cover. Replaced this weekend as well as repaired. Also changed spark plugs and do not see the rev issue any more, i think the guy was on crack when he said the governor shit. But we should be good now! Until the next repair!!
