335i caught fire!
So yesterday I was driving the car pretty hard for about 30 min, pulled over at a parking lot to make a phone call and about a minute and a half later I got a check engine light & smoking coming from the hood. I opened it up and saw my engine burning! I ripped of the insulation off the hood and put out the fire in the engine bay with my bookbag. Does anyone know what could have caused this? I have jb4, cp, dp, intakes, and running map 5. The white powder in the pictires is from a fire extinguisher someone passing by gave me to put out the remaining couple of spots. I didn't have an engine cover on, not sure if that caused it or saved me. The car has only 58k miles, bought it at 56.

Not having engine cover saved it. I can't see cracked fuel line. The oil cap is severely damaged so I assume is oil that was burning. Not gas. Also, the electrical wires! Where the loose and rubbing on the valve cover, injector coils and injector fuel lines? That might have cause it.

Looks like the brunt of the fire was near the oil cap, that's the only thing that stands out.
Hard to say what the cause was. Just be glad your ok. Insurance should cover the damages and repairs. |

Thanks, and I don't have full coverage, so I doubt they will do anything. Should I switch now or is that a bad idea lol

Bad idea. Switch to full coverage and then place a claim that your car caught on fire. Doesn't seem fishy it all.
I'm a firm believer in always having full coverage unless maybe your vehicle is only worth a few thousand dollars. If you want a lower premium just raise your deductible. Best of luck |

Who touched your engine bay last? Any recent work done? I know you just bought it.
Fires are hard to troubleshoot in general let alone from pictures. Glad you are ok. My guess would be a leaking fuel line/connection. Delete this post, add full comp ASAP as you just bought the car, and make this claim in a few weeks. Also don't post this anywhere else, like your facebook.

Used Car Lemon Law Fact Sheet
The Used Car Lemon law provides a legal remedy for consumers who are buyers or lessees of used cars that turn out to be lemons. The law requires dealers to give consumers a written warranty. Under this warranty, dealers must repair, free of charge, any defect in covered parts. If the dealer is unable to repair the car after a reasonable number of attempts, the consumer is entitled to a full refund. https://ag.ny.gov/consumer-frauds/us...law-fact-sheet https://ag.ny.gov/sites/default/file...Guide_2011.pdf I would assume the car creating the fire does not allow the dealer to use the damage by fire exception. Ive cracked open the rail to release fuel pressure before.
With the gas cap open battery disconnected pressure still high i would assume that the fire would have spread quickly if there was a crack and theyre hard metal hatd lines. Best guess would be a short maybe something is not grounded properly and a wire got hot enought to light up. Why was the cover off any work done recently? |
