The In-Car Surveillance Project
In the last few years I have had other motorists drive into my car and speed off, leaving me with big repair bills. Yesterday, someone put a nice scrape on the rear of my new E90 and it got me thinking.
Video evidence would be so useful! If someone hits my car and it was their fault, i'll have it on video and they couldn't then claim that I was at fault. If someone breaks into my car or hits it whilst i'm not there, their face or number plate will be caught on film so that the police can dish out some rich creamy justice! After looking around on the net it seems that no company sells anything suitable for this purpose, so I'm gonna build one myself and document it in this thread. I have many questions that will need answering, and what better place to ask them than E90Post! Watch this space... |

I have been thinking about the same thing.
But my soulution is a bit more complex then my knowlege is. I was thinking about 2-4 small cameras that covers eact side of the car. Since storage is cheep nowdays, I t could have a history for a week back. It is all stored on this memory and is to be extracted with a computer. that way, the car that hits you will be taped and you have a proof. This could also be used as an car alarm . Whenever someone approches the car, when it is locked, the camera switches on, and tapes. But this time is also uploads material to the central so the proof does not gets stolen with the car. But as i said, the idea is good but not my knolage hehe |

That's exactly what my system will do. It will start recording when motion is detected from up to 4 cameras in the car, each equipped with nightvision.
I've ordered the required parts and am waiting for them to arrive. I will document my progress here! |

It reminds of this story, where the thief was caught on a webcam! |

Well it looks like DriveCam is only for fleets of vehicles and they won't sell to individuals. However, the OBS unit looks perfect! It's a fair bit more expensive than a home made solution, but I can see myself getting one of these just because it has been researched and developed thoroughly.
