30F2 - DME: Superknocking, cylinder 6
So I'm currently on MHD stage 2+ 98RON map and I have recently just got a 30F2 saying super knock on cylinder 6. I'm running BP ultimate 98 RON all the time. Would the MHD map be too aggressive for the 98 RON and require a few extra litres of e85 to increase octane?

There isn't a lot of info on those codes and it doesn't even put the car into limp mode which is very concerning.
For whatever info there is about the superknock codes, the general consensus was that it is a very serious code and it should be sorted out ASAP ie serious knock/detonation event has occurred. I have had the code occur before and immediately switched the a less aggressive tune/fuel map and have not seen the code pop up again. |

I've seen that code on a trackday once on a hot day. In general the MHD tunes are too aggressive for the fuel we have here in Australia and running 5L-10L of e85 does smooth things up considerably.

Had a talk with Ken and he said yes its a combination of the fuel being not high enough octane and my 30k kms old OEM bosch spark plugs which I will change to NGK gappable ones. Looks like adding 5-10L of e85 and having fresh set of plugs will sort out the issue.
And also the code makes the DME pull timing and shoots fuel trims way up so to prevent engine damage. So I don't think it would cause any engine damage unless you keep on repeatedly get those codes. |

So I got the cylinder 6 superknock code again coincidentally after filling up with BP ultimate at the BP West Ryde opposite Officeworks in West Ryde. The last time I got the cylinder 6 superknock code was also right after I filled up at that petrol station. I pulled the spark plugs and coils at work after the car has cooled down and they are all slightly blackish but still has quite a bit of life left in them. Injectors are all index 12s and coils were replaced less than 20k kms ago using Bosch coils.
I have a strong feeling that the BP ultimate sold at that particular station is not actually BP ultimate 98 RON, that's why their prices are about 25 cents cheaper per litre than other BP stations. Will investigate further and if it turns out that BP station is selling lower octane fuels as BP ultimate. A case to Fair Trading will be opened. |

Just an update. Did a couple of logs of 3rd gear pulls and emailed to Ken@Wedge. In the logs, Ken clearly saw that the cylinders 4,5,6 had the most amount of timing corrections. With cylinder 6 being the highest amount of correction causing the DME to trigger the code in response to detection of knock. It is clearly a case of lower than advertised octane of 98 RON since that particular BP station sells their BP ultimate a full 25-30 cents cheaper than the other bigger BP stations. Also Ken commented that it may be a spark plug issue that has aggravated the problem caused by the slightly lower octane fuel. So looks like changing the spark plugs to NGK gappable ones is the way to go and then upgrading the Bosch coils to Eldor. I know if I go to another BP station or even Shell that advertises at the full price it is at now, I will not get the code at WOT.
Was pretty adamant to submit a case to Fair trading so I can at least tarnish the reputation of that BP station. However, the amount of evidence that needs to be provided is overwhelming and so may require a lot of logs and receipts with time stamps. And then making my engine go through their lower octane fuel just to get the evidence over and over again seems somewhat idiotic. So I caution anyone going by Victoria Road in Sydney near the Office works West ryde building. DO not fill up with BP ultimate at that BP station opposite the Office Works. If anyone has personal experiences with the BP station I'm talking about, please do share. Shout out to Ken@Wedge for helping me out constantly through emails. He is honestly the best and most customer service-inclined individual I have ever met in the car scene. |

Yes cylinder 1, 2, 3 all have timing corrections but not as large as 4,5 and 6 and so does not trigger any codes for knocks on any cylinders other than 6 which has the most amount of timing correction out of all the cylinders. Just gonna drive safe till this shitty fuel runs out and then refuel at another BP station and then relog and see the difference. Bet there won't be as much timing corrections on any cylinders, if any it would be insignificant.

I run very conservative OTS tune. I use stage 2 91 ACN map as I?d heard here that our octane levels are balls.
I use BP 98 exclusively (not from west Ryde) and got this code the other day on Cyl 1. I felt a vibration as I nailed the throttle going up a hill in 7th gear. No CEL but did have the code on cyl 1. I?ll be getting a custom tune so that it?s sorted. There?s no E85 in my area.
