Under seat subs
Hey guys,
I was thinking of adding a JL 10w7 with the 500/1 amp but now I'm looking to go with the under seat route instead. Reasons being saving trunk space, $$$ and possibly cleaner bass since it'll be coming directly from inside the cockpit. Not looking for anything crazy, I think around 300 RMS watts would do quite nicely. I believe my car has the Hifi system which I quite like, just really looking for extra bass. I think a 10" under each seat would be good for me. Any package suggestions? Costs? I listen mostly to radio-hip-hop, rap, pop, rock, pretty much anything that comes on except for country music. |

Damn that's a lot of good info ,
Honestly I went through that ultimate stereo system upgrade guide a few days ago and it might as well have been written in a different language talking about ranges, Hz, etc. If I tried to follow any of those set ups myself there's no doubt I'll end up frying my car's entire electrical system somehow. I want the extra oompf from adding a sub/amp package and if I could upgrade the stock speakers/tweeters for a bit extra I would if I'm convinced its a good or necessary upgrade. As far as speakers go, I don't have the ear that audio guys have to tell the slight differences between good and average unless the sound difference is really obvious. Right now I'm pretty apprehensive about just taking it anywhere because the computer system in bimmers are more complicated than the Hondas I've owned and I don't want to risk something going wrong. I'm going to keep my car for a long long time so I don't mind shelling out extra than I normally would in the past for a good system. If anyone has any personal recommendations in the Phoenix-Scottsdale area I'd definitely stop by to talk to them. |

Your average shop will not have a clue about how to do this.
The good thing about the Hi Fi system is its more or less independent from the computer electronics. Also the amp unplugs with a single lever and there is a Harness made by a guy called Technic that makes putting in an aftermarket amp a breeze. And now there are many plug and play speaker kits The kit that I got years ago. http://www.e90post.com/forums/attach...3&d=1329017429 that fit right in . A corner mounted subwoofer does not take much space, and will provide better bass than upgrading the underseats. And if you want to upgrade the underseats, you will need an amp to power them. Once you go down that road, you will do all the speakers.
Adding the amp and sub is a 3/10 on the DIY scale (1 is replacing windshield wipers, and 10 being an engine rebuild). Just get the Technic harness (https://technicpnp.com). The battery is the trunk, which makes it easy. If you have done any aftermarket stereo work, you should not have a problem. |

You can order a pre-fab box from http://www.wickedcas.com/home.php?cat=10 or http://musicarnw.com/
The Wicked Box is a 10, and the Music Car NW Box is for a 12. I have the Wicked box, and I'm happy with it. But I've heard good things about the Music Car Box. |

No need to go to a shop, you can do this yourself. Pretty much plug and play if you get the right components. Start with technic harness, go from there.

Hi,
as most people already recommended go for a custom enclosure. IF you add a custom box, then go for a Helix or RF 10" with dual 2ohm coils. This can work direct with a PP82 amplifier that can upgrade the whole system - you will get maximum from the OEM speakers as well after the DSP has been set. I just did this job in our E87 and compared to the Harman Kardon system in the 3 series from our next door neighbour this rock big time // Chris Quote:

Can you confirm what set up you have and maybe any videos if possible. I need to put up new videos as the videos I have on youtube is whilst I had some teething problems with my set up and that has now been fixed.

The system we made in this car is:
PP86DSP Match 2 way front Harman 8" OEM underseat (with a good DSP amp this is good speakers...) Match 10" woofer in custom enclosure in left side of the trunk. I have pictures but they are on another PC, but what do you want to know? // Chris Quote:

I have a 2011 335D that Ken from MusicarNW just did a small system too. We did the DSP, Earthquake SWS under seat subs with separate amp and lastly Kens tuning...After the install and listening to probably 14 song snippets to see how I liked.
Overall the system is very loud, crisp, dynamic, great clarity and stage presence, the bass is a huge upgrade for being under seat subs....Very Happy |
