Cheap rims

Does the brand of the rim really matter? I'm interested in purchasing a set of rims from ebay, they're a no name brand, but they're quite nice. Has anyone ever had any experience with Ebay rims?

Ebay is not a rim brand; it's a sales tool. No way of knowing.

I'd probably stay away given that our cars hub is 72.6 and they clearly state these are 74.1. Yet they claim to fit. Just spend a little bit more and get a decent set.

I would absolutely not buy those wheels I would rather pay more once, then have to replace a shitty set more than once.

It may "look" nice, but a wheel is far more functional than its look. It also has to be strong. What its made of, how its made, is it a copy or was it actually engineered.... all factor in.
When you hit a pothole, it may just crumble to pieces rather than bend. Both suck, but bending is far less dangerous than having the rim shatter.
Do you need to spend $800 a rim? No, but I would say the brand of the wheel matters. You can buy good yet affordable rims if you look at the right brands.

I considered getting a cheap set of wheels off eBay like that, but I think it's worth the money to get at least a brand name wheel, so if you ever damage one you can aquire a new one. check out UPwheels, Aodhan, ESR, and all sorts of other brands for cheap cast wheels, but I'd stay away from completely no name wheels

I love this kind of talk. Everyone wants to make you think that what is sold on Ebay is going to fall apart...really??? And because you have a BMW you some how MUST get name brand this and name brand that. Seriously...it wouldn't be allowed to be sold if it did. Can you imagine the lawsuits. I made my 2006 Evolution a 11 sec 1/4 car using ebay parts...when everyone swore up and down that it couldn't be done for that cheap...so bah humbug.

If you like em - get em.

Lol. Heavy ass wheels that crack or bend when you hit a bad pothole.. got it. Not to mention no customer support or warranty and bad quality finishes, etc.

Again - we are debating apples and oranges...YOU DON'T KNOW that what you say is true. So, you can say you know so and so and that means that...but it doesn't and you probably don't.

I've heard of just as many stories from name brand rims/parts having issues. Kinda like how everyone bitches and moans about how terrible oem is (water pumps, thermostats etc..) but when they replace the parts...what do they do?? Spend extra $$$ to replace them WITH FREAKING OEM???? Really? If OEM only lasted 50K why would you pay extra to only get 50k again??

I'm not sure how cheap of a rim you are referring to that has bad quality finish...I wouldn't accept that either. I'm just saying...don't knock everything just because you think your name brand is the shiznit. Cause usually it iznit.

AND personally, I love the VMRs. I'm just not going to get on the name brand parade and knock someone for wanting or THINKING about trying something else.

Just FYI, the "rim" is just a part of the "wheel". You're looking for wheels not rims.

I'm all for running cheaper parts if they work, I had cheap wheels but got a steal on nice used ones and so I sold them. I just want to be able to buy a single replacement rim, if I screw one up, that's my only issue. Ebay ones with literally no brand, that are only sold in sets of 4, would suck to try to find a replacement for. VMR's are still considered "cheap" by a lot of people. But at least if you ruin one you can find a replacement very easily, and have customer support etc.

inevitable huh? I know tons of people running them with zero issues. I know tons of people running cheap wheels without issues, and I've run expensive wheels, and cheap wheels, and never had an issue with any of them as long as they're installed and balanced right

As long as they're installed and balanced correctly you won't have issues? Wheel strength doesn't matter then?

The fact that they haven't bent or cracked yet is absolutely no indication that they won't in the future. Attempting to make that argument is foolish.

Wait until he nails the wrong pothole and then nobody will have to explain it to him.

"Our wheels meet or exceed strength requirements set forth by JWL/VIA/TUV, & are produced at ISO-9001:2000 certified facilities"

If they meet these standards, I have no issue running them on my car. Most OE wheels are cast. That's straight from VMR's website. Here are a few threads related to these certifications: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=396022
http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=596608
https://www.jwtc.jp/open/html/e/situmon1.html

long and short of it, no I don't trust ebay wheels, but yes I trust cast wheels with these certifications. I've seen cast wheels, flow formed, and cast wheels all break on pot holes.
