New to....don't shoot...mods?

So I'm not exactly new. I have a 335 N55 but getting an 2010 N54 535i. Like it's in the mail. 2010 fully loaded 100k miles. I'm way more excited than I should be for this

I know this is e90 territory but can I'm assuming the info here is transferable. Please let me know if it's not the case and I should stay STRICTLY in the 5 series lane.

That being said the car seems pretty solid from the pre purchase inspection. The current owner has replaced turbos, hot water pump and thermostat already along with some other things that escape this sleep deprived coffee and alcohol induced haze I'm currently writing from.

Car also has a solid exhaust. According to my math all that leaves me only having to drain my college kids tuition for
- FMIC,
- Downpipes and charge pipe. Is VRF still the go to? do you guys recommend anything else?
- Leaning towards Cobb for the tune.
- Haven't looked at intake yet.
There was more but again can't think of it.

*UPDATE* hey guys sorry the gist of the post is looking for the quick and dirty on MOD updates & recommendations. N54 is slightly different from N55 in that it supports BOV and other things I've looked past till this point. What else am I missing from the above proposed tune/mod list that makes sense to get done in one shot?

sorry for jumping all over the place...things are...busy for me

We've got two N54 335i coupes and one 2010 535ix. The 535ix only has a JB4 and DCI while the 335i's are pushing out quote a bit more hp with their additional mods.

I would term the 535 as a good handling, very comfortable, roomier and more luxurious car than our 335i's. For fun the 335i handles better, has alot more power and especially the manual one is more fun to drive.

It's kind of like comparing apples to oranges. For an everyday cruiser the 535 is a good choice. As far as reliability goes ours only has 34K miles on it so no problems at all yet. Enjoy it!

Thanks! will do. Unfortunately this is an automatic and I'll miss the manual. So much fun doesn't begin. this thing is a DREAM. the room was the first priority followed by all the bells and whistles. Automatic vs manual was actually pretty low on the list ironically lol

Be sure to check out tuning options from MHD.

Great performance and much more affordable than traditional routes.

Thanks that's actually what I came here for. will update the original thread

What's the quick and dirty on MHD? Looks like a flash that works in cohort with JB4 or Cobb. So can you technically run JB4, COBB and MHD, is that the recommended setup?

you MHD is the way to go. Not sure how much COBB supports this. JB4 is still very much alive, but its a piggy back. So unless you're running single/meth etc you don really need it. For stock turbos and reg or e85 blends MHD is more than enough.

A lot of people have moved form JB4 to MHD for theses reasons. Its cheaper and smoother, and the more sensible choice unless you absolutely need a piggyback.

No, you either run JB4 or Cobb or MHD - not all 3.

I won't get into back end flashes right now as it's way beyond the scope of the thread.

Our most popular sellers:

Intakes: BMS DCI & AFE Momentum GT

Intercoolers: ETS, Wagner, VRSF & ER

Downpipes: VRSF

Chargepipe: ER & VRSF

Definitely go MHD; easy to deal with, pain-free, and constantly updated with map tweaks and other little settings tidbits.

I'd go VRSF for everything bolt-on. Cheap, tested, functional. 7" for the intercooler.

i would just keep the 5 series as stock as possible and make it a nice crusier. Maybe just do a mhd/jb4 tune and intercooler and call it a day.

I would save the bolt ons for your 3 series.

ah gotcha. Well you got extra transfer case and axels in the front, so your turn in feels slower. When i drove my friends m235i, i almost over turned because i wasn't use to the faster turn in compared to my 335xi, also maybe because of the difference in hydrolauic and electric steering too.

Acceleration, i didn't really feel a difference. We both had stage 1 jb4's.

Sorry must've taken leave of my senses charge pipe and intercooler are top priority along with DP. Does the fix truly work btw? I think on N55 it's still not quite there but I could be wrong.

DP fix work. If you are getting Cobb/Jb4/MHD, you wont need it since these tunes will suppress the CEL

Thanks. What's been the differentiators in the BOV market and is the BOV a priority addition or 'nice to'

Congrats!
BOV are mostly for sound.
Tial and HKS are the most popular ... HKS is loud, Tial is the quieter option

Thanks guys. Quick update. Went CP, 7" Intercooler, DCI & Catless DP from VRSF. Things were well for a while (small hiccup while installing) but now I'm troubleshooting CEL.

Will update...

Do you have a tune?

Did you change the spark plugs yet?

If you don't have a tune, the CEL is from the downpipes.

If you recently added a tune and didn't change the spark plugs, you are probably misfiring, causing the CEL.

Jeff, I think you might be on to something. Added the tune and drove it around one day no problem. Drove it around the next, got on the throttle and then a CEL came on but went away. Did the same thing today and the CEL stayed. Missfire code is present along with some 02-like messages below.

29CF DME combustion misfires
2C32 Lambda Control
2C6A Oxygen sensors after catalytic converter: mixed up
2C6B Oxygen sensors after catalytic converter: system check

DME shadow(inactive) codes
2AAF DME fuel pump plausibility

I'm hoping the 6A and 6B we can ignore as they're caused by the catless DP. Misfires are probably spark plugs.

Welcome to the n54 world

First thing i always recommend is spark plugs/coils, make sure you have healthy injectors also. For tune, i highly recommend MHD to start, depending on your mods down the road possibly custom tune. FMIC, CP and DP's will turn the car into a little monster.
