Battery charger for coding and flashing. 2amp enough?

Hey everyone,

TLDR: Is a 2 amp/12V trickle charger good enough to keep the car "alive" while doing the initial ~20 minute MHD flash?

I am completely new to tuning a car without a carburetor, so I'm trying to figure things out.

I just got my K+DCAN cable and am about to flash my car with MHD. I have a 2 amp / 12V trickle charger, but am not sure if that's strong enough to keep the car's electronics on while doing the initial 20 minute flash. All the instructions just say "hook up a battery charger" but I can't find any details about charger specifics.

My other option would be to hook jumper cables from my BMW to another car that is running as if I was jumping it and just leave it connected during the entire flash.

All thoughts and suggestions are appreciated!

2AMP trickle charger isn't enough. Then again, many people (with GOOD FRESH BATTERIES) have done the MHD flash without a battery charger.

I personally hooked me car up to another just for peace of mind.

You could also save a lot of battery being used up by pulling the fuel pump fuse - then you wouldn't have to worry at all.

Yeah, I just connected my BMW to another car with jumper cables. No troubles with the flash. Thanks!

2 amp is probably not enough. I was doing a coolant bleed running the water pump a few times with a battery charger set to trickle and 2 amp and the battery got real low. Glad I wasn't doing a flash.

If and when I do a flash I set mine to trickle and 10 amp someone chime in if that still isn't enough.

get a 6 amp at least. Especially if your bat is 2+ yrs old.

I haven't done it for some months but seem to recall it being more like 38 minutes. I usually pull the fuel pump fuse and use a 2amp trickle charger.
