N54 Wastegate flap
Hi all,
2008 335 with 75,000km (~40mi) My car was one of the many that had a very loud wastage rattle on the original turbos. I took the turbos out just over a week ago and took them to a rebuilder. They were very familiar with the N54 turbos and had in the past either machined new wastage flaps/arm/bushing pieces themselves or used the Turbo Lab of america kit available on Ebay. Since they had success with both in the past, I went for the turbo lab option since I would have had my turbos ready to go back in sooner than waiting for the machine shop. Now I've got my turbos back and I noticed that both the original BMW wastage flaps (they kept the parts cut out to show me), and the turbo lab pieces have a flap that is not held solid to the arm. Im told that the rattle comes from the actuator arm coming out of adjustment, and from wearing out in the bushing in the exhaust side the wastage arm rotates through. Also research on this forum I haven't seen any reports of people labeling the loose flap as a problem. I can't see how the flap being not a solid piece won't rattle even from brand new. The pictures attached you can see the amount of movement between the flap in the arm since I hold the flap in either direction in the pictures. about 1/16". Anyone know why this flap would be allowed any movement at all? Either way I'm happy they were pulled at this point anyway since I was burning oil through them, had worn thrust plates. And if they're still rattling it wouldn't be hard to pull the DPs later and weld that flap to the arm.. Does anyone know of a reason the flaps need to be left moving in their mount on that arm? |
