Scary sound n54 with revs

Hi guys!

Please look my video, i recorded it form the passanger side, i think it is abnormal loud knocking.

Here's a list of things I've tried so far while chasing this noise:

-replaced all 24 lifters
-cam ledges and rectangrings absolutly normal. no cratches(cams and rockers show no abnormal wear)
-ran engine with serpentine belt removed; noise persists
-all six injectors are 12 revision
-change oil and filter (shell 5w40)

look around with stetoscope, and i cant localize this sound. But it louder from the passanger side.

No metall shavings in oil.

My car fully stock, no any mods. This sound i cant hear into the car, but if windows open and driven near the wall - this sound definitely audible.

Help me please. May be it from chain tensioner? Any ideas...

its driver side:

Any advice?

P.s. sorry for my english (

Yeah, most of what I heard was the direct injection clicking and an exhaust leak tick.

do a leak test on the exhaust system, if no leak is found then you might have a much bigger problem on your hands...

exhaust test... how it perform? can you give any instructions about it?

Great idea! Can't imagine how I can skip it when car was on a lift. It sound was from front catalysts converter area. I'm sure 99% that it is a leak in the exhaust. Thanks! I will try it and tell about the results.

I have a pretty similar tick, but mine sounds more metallic than yours does in the vid ? Does yours sound metallic at all ? Mine rises with revs and does not go away, curious how to diagnose the exhaust leak ?

Get two of your mates to block off both pipes with their feet. Walk around car and listen to air rushing out.

i think metallic too. Sense like valve tapping. If leak before turbos - it seems true.

today again lift car, close exhaust tube and not found any leaks all seems good.

poke with stetoscope again, and on this screw sound difenitly audible

maybe leak before turbos on manifold? for example graphite ring broken?

my mechanic think it knock from exhaust camshaft, but camshift look very nice...

what you think? how localize problem?

It does sound like a top end issue like a cam ledge or worn lifter to me.

Those will trigger Vanos fault codes. I would send oil sample to lab. Hopefully will not show excess metal due to spun bearings.

What does your engine rebuilder says about this? Oil analysis aren't expensive. Get one done. Determining defects by noise/sound is dificult.

Like I said in post#17 that will most likely trigger Vanos fault code. Issues with chain would probably trigger Timing fault Codes. It has been 6 month, so the engine rebuilder need to take responsibility and fix it for you, whatever it is.
