Spark plugs and Ignition Coils
What kind of coils and plugs are you guys running?
I've heard Delphi or Eldor for the coils, is one better than the other? I have a n55 JB4/mhd bef with catless dp. (FMIC is next) |

I have the bosch plugs and delphi plug, no problems on my end. I bought the plugs from turner motorsport and coils from amazon, better pricing at the time. From my experience with the N55, the coils have some corrosion. Removing them from the old plugs and reusing caused me issues. The old coils caused a misfire with new plugs. Id rather be safe then sorry and replace everything.

FYI that there are now a set of plug and play aftermarket coils out there from Precision Raceworks. N54 has some ignitions settings mapped out, but they are still supposed to work with N55's multispark. I think they said it was 2x the spark energy vs stock.

I'm not sure if "better" is the right word here...it's made to manufacturer specs by a different OEM, who may or may not use different technology to achieve the same outcome. Some part numbers supercede others, and it's always a good rule of thumb to use the most recent part number.
It's ambiguous as to why part numbers change, but it can be something as simple as a manufacturer contract with BMW ran out and a competitor can do it at a better price, or as extreme as a fundamental improvement in the overall design of the part due to an original design flaw. Generally, if there's a serious design flaw, you'll know from SIBs, recalls, or forum posts. What you can know is that because it's an OEM, you can be more assured that it's going to be a compatible part that performs as you would expect. If you buy from a reputable company, they're not going to knowingly give you a defective part if a SIB/recall currently exists (and if they do, they should replace it). Bosch, NGK, Delphi, and Eldor are all good choices for plugs/coils. Bosch is the current OEM for plugs, and Eldor is the current OEM for coils. |
