Exclamation PROcede v3 Dyno and Map(s) update-- PART 1

Part 1- THE DATA
I'm just putting the finishing touches on the v3 maps. Now that Bimmerfest is behind us, we can get back to development. Today i borrowed a 6MT from a local v3 user (thanks Zoeb!). Took it to an independent Dynojet facility (Modacar, Livermore CA) and tested a few maps/configurations.

The car has the following mods:

PROcede v3
Vishnu Cat-back exhaust
Big 19" rims (a bit heavier than stock)
Running on Shell 91oct
Dual cone intake (tested along with stock airbox/stock filter)

Tested a few maps. ALL RUNNING DEFAULT USER TORQUE OF 87%. All of which will be on our website for download within the next 48hrs.

We tested the following configurations/maps:

1) Valet (stock boost/timing/fuel) RUN 10
2) Low Boost Map RUN 9
3) Full Boost Map for stock intake RUN 8
4) Full Boost Map for open element intake RUN 5

For the sake of clarity, I separated HP and TQ into two graphs.

Also attached, in order, are datalogs of the above runs:
RUN 10 (valet):

RUN 9 (Low Boost map):

RUN 8 (Full Boost stock airbox map):

RUN 5 (Full Boost open element air filter map):

NOTE: The logging channels should be, for the most part, self explanatory. Logged is RPM, Boost, Debug 4 (Boost solenoids duty cycle %) and Air charge temp in deg C.

PART II: Analysis
Perhaps the most interesting bit of data to look at is wastegate solenoid duty cycle (Debug 3). For those who don't know, the greater the duty cycle, the more vacuum is allowed into the wastegate signal line. The more vacuum, the more the wastegate is pulled closed. The more it's pulled close, the more boost. Phew.

Ok... so looking at the valet (stock) run, we see WG Sol% in the 32-36% range. With the highest % being in the RPM range that had the highest boost pressure (9.5psi at ~5500rpm). Above ~6000rpm, boost begins to taper off down to just 5psi by 7000rpm. As such, you can see WG Sol% taper off to 32% up top.

Next, we look at MAP 1 (low boost tune). This map runs 10-12psi of boost. You can see the effect the higher boost target has on WG Sol %. Instead of running in the 30s, it ramps up as high as 45%. Above 6500rpm, however, the boost begins to taper downwards aggressively, dropping down to just 6psi by 6900rpm. You can see WG Sol % follow accordingly, dropping to just 32% by redline.

Now, let's look at MAP 2 (stock intake). This map targets 14-14.5psi up top and down low. And 12-13psi in the midrange. This makes for a nice, flat knock resistant power curve as shown in the dyno charts. One that is torque limited to ~370lbs. But is very 3extended in both directions. Much more so than other tunes we've done and seen. Boost is also tapered off above 6500rpn, falling to just 9psi by 7000rpm. In order to acheive the 14-14.5psi boost target at 6500rpm, WG Sol% ramps all the way up to 50-55%. About 20% higher than the previous 10-12psi map which was about 20% higher than the valet's 8-10psi run.

The next run (MAP 2 with open element intake) is where things get interesting. In the critical 5500-6500rpm range, the boost target is 0.5-1psi higher than the previous stock-intake map. This is because we had to limit the boost target when running the restrictive stock airbox. Trying to run a turbo harder than it needs to just generates heat and exhaust backpressure. Neither are good for the component longevity or power consistency. Don't belive that the factory airbox is restrictive? Take a look at the WG Sol% required to hit a higher boost level with the upgraded dual intakes. Yes, it's LOWER than it was in the lower boosted run that breathed through the factory airbox! You'll also notice that the intake temp at the end of the run (7000rpm) is a whopping 7 deg C cooler with the "dyno glory" intake. All this from simply getting rid of an intake restriction upstream of the turbo. So yes, we would argue that making a 365whp can be less stressful than making 345whp when properly matching your upgrades to your power goals. It also goes to show how misleading it is when people claim that a turbo cannot be run above Xpsi. It all depends on the rest of the system and how it is tuned.

PART III: V3 logic and you
Coming soon...

Wow, an aftermarket intake with V3 is good for 20hp? Damn! Great numbers!

Very impressive numbers.

Does the V3 still allow user torque settings? And if so what % were those runs at?

Would really love to see a customer car with Catless DPs.. you mentioned the difficulty of dealing with spikes and inconsistancy when running DPs. Not to take anything away from the amazing things you are developing.. a TRUE DP map is all I really desire.

He says these were at the default for V3 which are 87%

and yes, you can adjust torque settings

Already done. Boost is stable as can be. I'll post up a similar thread using a catless car as an example later this week.

Thats what I'm waiting for before I install my DPs. A map that takes into account the additon of an intake and catless DPs. Once I get V3 with the catless map, I'll be more than happy to go to ATL for a dyno session. I'm more worried about this invisible code thing right now, so Shiv take your time.

Does the open element CAI map work for the Ultimate Racing Cold Air Intake? Or is it designed for the dual cone setup? Or is it a generic map overall for "better flow"?

Shiv have you tested V3 or V2 for that matter with a car flashed with Progman 29.2?? I just got it. It has a deeper exhaust note and is not as agressive feeling as 28.01 was.

They keep smoothing things out but at the cost of performance. Thanks

Shiv, 92 octane users will leave settings at 87% default or can we bump it up?
