POLL: If you could have any 2 gauges (boost, afr, etc..) what would they be?
I am trying to figure out the most wanted combination for multiple gauges.
Forget about location, aesthetics's, etc... just think about what 2 points of information are most important. I would think Boost and AFR , but I want everyones opinion... maybe coolant temp, voltage, EGT, etc..? PLEASE PICK ONLY 2 Post your thoughts, and reasoning. Also, with your choices, consider the ease of install for the various sensors... Thanks! -Rick |

I'd want Boost/Vac and AIT (which wasn't an option).

Boost for obvious reasons and EGT for exhaust temps to know if you're running too hot.

Boost and AFR Wideband. That is truly all you need.
EGT gauges are rather pointless unless you have a probe in each cylinder runner. Although they can give you an overall reading, it won't tell you if one cylinder is slightly lean or rich or too advanced or retarded. Most people don't have a clue what EGT readings are safe or harmful anyway as it varies from car to car. A 2jz-gte may be able to withstand 850*C EGT's while some other car is in danger at 700*C. Get what I mean? Oil temp, the car already has one. Oil pressure is also not necessary on a car with stock cooling components and turbo's and oil pump. Air Intake Temp-- Absolutely pointless Coolant Temp---- Pointless Fuel pressure---- Pointless on a stock fuel system

= coolant temp.
I'm not a tuner at all but I don't think water temp is pointless, quite some 335i go to limp mode on the track thus the coolant gets too hot. Knowing EGT's can prevent cylinders 5+6 from running too hot. Sure, Boost/vac and AFR are the most important gauges. |

But anyway, on a serious note, for FI applications, coolant temp is not a necessary gauge. A properly designed cooling system from the get-go will maintain proper coolant temperatures regardless. Yes there are fluctuations in the coolant temp, but it should never go so far out of range that the ECU deems its unsafe and throws a limp.

Boost/vac: Useful for obvious reasons
Oil pressure: close to useless, by the time you notice you have none engine has eaten itself. Oil temp: have one in the dash Water temp: Oil temp will reflect water temp somewhat Air/Fuel ratio (wideband AFR): Good for info. Fuel pressure: Do they make one that goes up to 3000psi? Volts: not a critical system in terms of potential engine damage EGT (exhaust gas temp): Good info, really need two, don't want to weld in bungs in manifolds. Compass (heading): in mirror, and nav AIT (air intake temp): might be good to know but, not really much you can do about it. You could just use this: http://www.aeroforcetech.com/Interce...eral_info.html or this: http://shop.edoperformance.com/plx-d...t-p-10924.html They wouldn't be good for anything a piggy back would be modifying but, if you are running a flash like a lot of people are soon going to be it will work great. |
