330d Turbo failure map options please
Hi,
Had my 2006 330d nearly a year now was all good until left work yesterday and under acceleration heard a noise so stopped immediately and had coolant pumping out. Thought it was just a water pump however turns out my turbo has actually came right off and had broke a water pipe in doing so. Im going to buy a reconditioned turbo for around £450 (not the end of the world) however the garage say that it was probably the remap that caused the issue. The car was already mapped + dpf and egr before I brought it however the receipt for the remap AND dpf was only £175 which seems stupidly low. Any thoughts on what to do after my new turbo is fitted? Im guessing a remap from evolve or emaps would be safer? Having it taken off is obviously safer but really couldn't drive an unmapped one now. Also any other useful information about the issue? Thanks |

What do you mean by your turbo has come right off?
If you mean the housing has broken, that's quite extreme although I'd be surprised if a remap did that. The gutting of the DPF could have been done by the owner and a cheap man with a laptop style remap flashed. If always be wary of these but again, I can't see the remap breaking the turbo housing. |

hi thanks for your response, the garage havnt got the turbo out to have a proper look yet will post a picture tomorrow but the whole turbo is completely loose. Loose enough to knock the powersteering fluid and also completely broke a coolant hose. Dont think the actual housing has cracked though.
I assumed that a too aggressive map with too much boost could be the problem however the previous owner said it was meant to be a mid range map (270bhp) ish |

not sure if you can see had to resize photos, theres an obvious cracked piece on the first picture. Guy at the garage is adament its from a remap I just dont understand if its either a bad map pushing too much boost, something else or just unlucky.

If you hadn't have mentioned the remap, would he have diagnosed it as a failure due to a remap?
Does he have the option to remap the car for you as he could be trying to steer you down that route for a few extra quid. |

I don't think I've heard of a turbo being completely ripped away/cracked just from a remap. The turbo may not be the original and could have been from an accident damaged car for example or some other explanation for why it would do that. They do get hot (hence oil/water cooling etc) and if that side has failed then that might explain it.
I guess unless you can have it properly investigated/analysed to determine then only route would be to get the new tub on and update the ECU to wipe the mapping. Then drive it like that for a while to make sure all is ok and then get a better map applied.

Hi, the guy definitely isnt trying to get any money he didnt like the sound of a remap and said I should take it off. Got a refurb turbo on order and will hopefully be ok. Will get a different map for peace of mind but sounds like just unlucky I guess. Like I said couldnt go to an unmapped now
Thanks for your help |
