Arrow Why you NEED to drive the Alps...

The opening scene pretty much sums it up why every Petrolhead needs to drive the Alps! Here is another great video from Joe Achilles...

Enjoy,
Dackel

Thanks for posting.. love these teasers before we get over there in September.

We have 4 weeks in the alps all planned out.
.....many, many many passes

Germany > S.W. Austria > Across Italy > back up to Austria > & back down into Italy Dolomites > then into Switzerland > back up to W. Germany > track day at the Ring > over to Spa for another track day.

Definitely top of my bucket list.

How long reasonably do you need to take advantage of the best routes. Weekend...week..couple of weeks? Me and the wife are doing this when I retire...but as that's likely 20 years off feels like I need to make time now! I'd need a few days on either end of the Alps part to get there from good old UK so will burn the holidays pretty quick.

A week off I was thinking. I need to buddy up with someone else from the UK for it!

How were you able to secure the car model? I'm thinking about renting from Sixt for the trip in September.

It's not a certainty, they still have the weasel clause about substations.
With a premium brand rental, everyone I talked to said they are pretty good about getting you what you asked for if you book well in advance.
I booked in April.

I went to Portugal for the 435i press intro years ago... down in Cascais near Lisbon.... That was my first taste of Portugal and I really, really liked it down there!! And the women were so beautiful too & friendly too! I really must go back for another visit soon.

You can do it on your own or with a buddy. Joe Achilles(in his video) did his tour with Petrolhead Tours You can find their website and check out their tour programs. I think one day I would love to do that for a living. Organizing our European 1Addicts tours(Stelvio/Sella, etc) is a lot of work and buying into a turn key tour like Petrolhead Tours is really a nice way to see the Alps.

I would say spending a week or is fine. Just depends on how much you enjoy driving and not sleeping in your own bed. lol

Love swiss and will be back again.
^^+1 on that! The Swiss are brutal with their speeding fines! AND... if they catch you driving more than +40 kph over a posted speed limit(back roads are only 80 kph! Not 100 kph like here in DE)... they can legally TAKE your car from you! As in forever! Just driving a few kph over a speed limit can cost you over 135 euros as well. Having an app(which is illegal, but worth the risk I think) is not a bad idea. I love the nature beauty in CH, but the speeding fines and normal prices for food and hotel rooms is just insane. 6 euros for a Coke or 45 euros for some Schnitzel or paying double for a hotel room(than in DE or Italy) That's why I always like cross the border and stay the night outside of Switzerland - when I can... IF I can!

Awesome video. Looks like they have a couple West Coast tours next year. It might be fun to get some folks here out for part of that drive.

Anyone else notice the woman casually climbing up the switchbacks? hahaha

There is a popular bike trail here that has that same switch back set up. Would be fun to do in a car!

I booked in April.
I went back to the Alps last year to do Stelvio Pass again. This time, I rented an Audi A3 (manual) from Avis.
When I get there to pick it up, they tell me they ran out but would put me in something that was in the same class and drove the same.
I ended up with a manual/diesel VW Beetle.
Obviously I flipped out on them, but it didn't get very far.

Good luck with yours! Some companies offer an option of: "rent this exact car" prior to booking. I think Hertz offers that.

Enjoy the Alps!
