Performed CBU cleaning on my 2011 with 65K ...

with solid results. The intake system was choked down by about 1/3, swirl flaps required a detailed clean and the runners, valves and EGR were severely coked up. I was pulling a #6 injector code, but have not had it return post CBU clean, and do not expect it to.

I did not clean the intake, I had a radiator shop perform a caustic soda bath ultrasonic cleaning at 180 degrees F with very good results. It remained in the bath overnight. I was a bit hesitant at first, but after researching, there would be no adverse affects to the intake. It came out looking brand new! I know there will be some detractors. I was prepared to buy a used intake in the event the caustic soda bath damaged the intake. I would recommend this type of cleaning.

Any lost performance has returned and my mileage has increased from 32 to 36MPG.

This is not a job for the faint of heart! I could not get a BMW adapter tool to clean the round runners on the top side of the engine. I fashioned a piece of PVC to adapt the vacuum and still use the media want to enter the intake. You really need the right tool from BMW. I had ordered one, and the day it was to arrive it did not show. I called the vendor and was told they could not source it from BMW and sell it to an individual. This didn't sound right! I will eventually source the tool, I plan on keeping the car for many miles.

If you have a stock set up, plan to perform CBU cleaning. I could not justify keeping this car if I was not a qualified mechanic able to perform this procedure. Hopefully I'm good for another 65K!

I'm not a qualified mechanic by any stretch and was able to do the walnut blast following the procedures posted on this site. You just need time and patience. Getting the intake ultrasonically cleaned is a great way to go. If you don't have emission inspections do an EGR delete to keep from needing CBU cleaning again. I think having CCV bypass might be instrumental in the CBU issue also.

CBU is caused by the mix of soot from the EGR and oil from the CCV. Take one out of the equation and you're good to go. EGR is best to take out of the mix because even if you left the EGR and removed the CCV, the soot would still build up on the intake. But oil from the CCV alone will not build up.

Is there any real benefit to having a ccv catch can if egr is disabled?

Less oil in your fancy intercooler. It's not a huge deal on diesels where the oil just gets burned as fuel

There should be no soot in the intercooler.

I think he got confused and said soot instead of oil. Oil for sure will accumulate in the IC.
