The 1 Series sedan was announced last year exclusively for the Chinese market and was not expected to be introduced for the U.S. market, until now... maybe.

According to an unnamed source cited by Automotive News, the 1 Series sedan could be made available for U.S. consumption as soon as early 2019. The 1 Series sedans is built on the same UKL platform that the BMW X1 rides on, and could likewise be offered in the U.S. in both sDrive (FWD) and xDrive (AWD) models.

Once it goes FWD based there is a lot of competition at a really low price level. My guess is the market that wants a "BMW" regardless is big enough to support it but I more than likely wouldn't be one of these people.

Agreed. The CLA for example (intro MB) has done very well. The 1 series can take a good chunk of that market share.

FWD is a no for me for any car. Regardless of the brand name.

Why would you buy a BMW 1 series in FWD when you could just buy a well optioned out mini for less

Mainly because of the Blue and White Roundel and not the wings...

I've had two minis in my life, 2006 and a 2011. Still to this day a vast majority of Americans have no idea Mini is owned by BMW.

It's all about the brand, nobody cares what they can get and for what. If it has a German badge they feel rich.

I've been to a few Cars and Coffees, the cockiness of the guys (and gals) driving the CLA is astonishing.

Why tf would they make it FWD? What is the reasoning behind this? Why not make it RWD or AWD? Is it FWD in China? IF SO, why is it FWD in China?

If a BMW NA version of this car is built in China, I think that would be a dealbreaker for many. Including me, if I were in the market for this car.

I personally have a number of reasons for this. Others would have other reasons; some the same, some not. There's already a significant anti-China sentiment among consumers here. When offered a choice, many avoid buying anything made in China. Only when there is no choice -- such as with certain consumer electronics or Apple products -- and quality is kept high does the stigma lift.

There is choice in this niche. I think BMW is woefully overestimating the market sentiment here if this model is exported from where it is built now.

The better question is;

Does anyone actually think the CLA is a good car? The car has terrible reviews across the board and is truly a poor excuse for what was once a true luxury brand. I don't think even the owners think it is a good car. If BMW stoops that low, where your true competition is Camry's, Accords... it will be nearly impossible for them to match the reliability, resale value and more than likely price... in addition potential brand name damage from marketing as a premium brand... i kind of already think there are too many BMWs on the road.

Agreed, driving enjoyment is just not there... but all aside... at this price point, you are marketing to Accord / Camry owners, so I doubt that will be an issue.

Hahaha!! I agreed with you. Most youngsters nowadays get cocky easily when they are seen driven in a 'luxury' but FWD car. In my case, its the youngsters that drive Golf GTI and Golf R. Most of them are very cocky.

Im from Malaysia btw.

Depends on the price point, if they want above Audi prices like they do for other similar products this won't be the Accord/Camry group cross shopping them. Starting price on the A3 is roughly the highest price Accord you can buy? Then the BMW is likely to start higher, with the driving dynamics better than the Accord but the size of a Civic?

BMW would likely take Sales crown with this model. However with the popularity of hot hatches in the US market, why isn't the RWD 1er making an appearance!?
