I've been chasing a knock/thud sound from my front end (2006 330i) for over a year to no avail. I've replaced struts, strut mounts, all 4 front control arms, swaybar bushings and swaybar end links, but the knock/thud was still there.

However, last weekend i did a 'flex' test of my steering rack with a dial gauge and noticed the rack has considerable play and i found the knock. If you are chasing a knock in your front suspension, take a look at my video and see if it will solve your problem. It solved mine!

You replace the tie rods ?

Yep, inner and outer. Forgot to list that.

Its most likely the steering column there was a STB on it, I've replaced my rack, including inner and outer tie rods and the intermediate steering shaft and it went away for little but came back. Doesn't bother me enough to deal with replacing the column.

This is interesting, I have small play and I always thought it just some looseness in the universal joint. May have to check out the adjustment screw!

Hi mate I am trying to find a knock after replacing lots of parts tried to open up the link you posted but wouldn’t open up? Was it the column that was knocking?

I'm interested in this too...I have a weird feeling pop/knock when I'm turning my wheel also. Isn't there a u-joint that connects the steering column to the rack? Could that be lose or worn out?

My wheel pops when turning full lock right or shall way to the left after driving slightly. Did you have this?

what was your problem sorry I cant open video? I am having the same issue when driving slowly over uneven road I get a knocking noise from front I have replaced everything I even got another steering rack from quarry motors but still the same

Yep...that's what mine is doing.

Anyone find what's causing it??
