Joyriide Detailed: Infiniti G35 Coupe

As you will notice, this car was very clean. The owner keeps it garaged (has his own work vehicle) and gives it a weekly wash. Thing is, thats all he does to it. He just washes it (and wants to keep it that way). Car needed claying and a light polish to raise the gloss and clean the paint. Menzerna 106ff was the polish of choice as usual.

I had a real tough time getting my polish to work. It was record heat today in Miami, so I'm sure that may have played a role, humidity was high, and LOTS of smoke and ash in the air. None the less, the job got done and it came out great to a level the owner will notice more the weeks to come.

Great work as always man, don't you just love working on clean cars because it lets you spend more time making it perfect instead of trying to remove years of grime and build up.

Great work bro. Very reflective. BTW for a guy who's so meticulous and babies his car, those rims look ate-up (curb rashes)

I believe that Infinitis have a very hard clearcoat which may be why you were having difficulty with your polish.

There was post on I think either bimmerforums or autopia where a professional detailer made a few passes with his rotary on a G35 with a polish and after checking his paint depth gauge didn't make a dent in it.

I know the thread you're talking about, but that was not the case with me. Correction was being made, the issue was buffer hope, product caking and smears after only 15 seconds spining at 1000rpms (while I spread the product to begin breakdown). This has happened to me before a few times but never consistantly, and I always polish the same way. I run pad under warm water (to help give some flexibilty to dense foam pads), spin dry, and add one dime sized amount of polish with a spritz of qd on the first pad. Spread around a little and spin it at 1000 to even it out before I bump it to 1500 for correction.

Any suggestions?

I've been polishing via rotory for 3 years and this has happened about 3-4 times. Paint chirping included. This also leads to the panel getting very hot, causing me to quit half way and go a different route.

I live in Florida so humidity is a big issue.

Like you said, it's probably the humidity that was the issue, especially since you used 106ff. To soften up the pads try a heat gun on a low setting or even a hair dryer, I have done that for orange pads which tend to be very stiff especially when new.

I hear those 3M backing plates are great for buffing with dense thick pads. I also think the ash and smoke in the air was at fault too.

Yeah I heard that too, but they're pretty pricey. Plus after using the purple wool pads my orange pads have been collecting dust. I just wish the wool didn't cake up so fast.

Exactly, a spur is definately needed. I only have 3 wool apds, so after about a panel and a door I have to walk in side and clean them followed by a spin dry on the rotory.
