335i - Engine Warning

Hiya,

This morning my beloved 335i startled me into thinking something might be broken...I started the car as usual and the big yellow 'engine has a problem' warning indicator came on and a message that there was reduced power.

I turned the engine off and waited a minute. Upon restarting the engine sputtered a bit, revs danced around between 500 and 1200 rpm and then it settled to normal.

I tentatively drove it to work - 26 miles - and it appears to be fine.

Should I be worried? Is this simply a blip or would it be wise to have it checked by the Dealer? The car has done 22000 miles.

Cheers,
S

If it happens again - take it to the dealer. If not - don't worry.

The car will have logged the error..

I can check it for you if it's an OBDII code.

Where do you live ?

PM me

Thank you - most kind, but it seems to be okay now The car has been fine all day - spent an hour in London traffic with no probs at all.

Would you believe, while I was driving to a Meeting in the afternoon the salesperson from the Dealer called me as a courtesy to see how I was getting on after 12 months ownership. I told him about the event and he said it is most likely a sensor-related issue whereby a code wasn't interpreted properly the first time around causing the warning - and that it was unlikely to be a persistent problem.

Not high pressure fuel pump failure? I know they go into limp mode once that fails.

FWIW I had the yellow EM Warning light come on just over a week ago. I stopped and checked the manual which said I could get home under reduced power. Power was definitely down but it seemed to run smoothly enough. I called BMW Emergency Assistance who came round and diagnosed that there was some problem with the VANOS system. He reset it and advised me to book it into the dealer - Sytner in Birmingham. I drove it in today without the problem reoccuring - 25 miles. When I called in later they said that the problem was with the camshaft controlling the inlet valves and it would need a new camshaft, a camshaft carrier and assorted other parts. Apparently the problem was that there was insufficient oil pressure being generated to cause the VANOS system to work properly. So, if I was you I'd take it into the dealer and get it checked over properly. In my case it isn't the first time this problem had manifested itself as the service chap told me that two fault codes were coming up and BMW know from prior experience what the problem is.

You may have a problem with the Vanos system working correctly. The first time the dealer changed the high pressure fuel pump but then I had the same issue two days after the new pump was put on, took it back to the dealer and discovered that it was a problem with the Vanos system.

surely if there is low oil pressure issue, then other problems could arise.
