Best way to clean tail pipes?

Hi everyone,

I'm wondering if anyone has found a really effective way to clean turbo dust off of the tail pipes on the 335i. I am thinking that there must a good solvent out there that will remove this without too much rubbing or scratching, but I really haven't found it yet. Thoughts?

I would think you would get better response in a different forum. I have not found anything in particular that works except work. Each week when I wash the car I take a clean towel and remove the dust off the pipes. Sometimes I do it mid week if I notice build up.

I use Mothers Mag & Aluminum Polish, seems to work without too much elbow grease needed It's a paste though, not a liquid...

"Turbo dust" .

Mothers Chrome Polish also works well and comes in a liquid. Use 000 steel wool on the inside of the pipes, a cotton rag without nap on the outside (I use an old soft t-shirt on the outside). You can make them look new again.

+1 on both counts. Is turbo dust anything like fairy dust?

Thanks guys! I knew someone would have experience with this. Mother's Mag and Aluminum polish seems to be a good place to start

Great advice! +1 on the steel wool! MF works well with chrome polishes too...

I like to:

1. Push a towel back into the pipe to ensure you do not get water into the pipe. If you get water back there, then you will get the Smokey pipes. Then get a long set of thin pliers to grab and pull the towels out when finished
.
2. Wash with a aggressive soap like CWG, CWC, or Dawn

3. Clay

4. Bring out the steel wool and I like to keep it lubed with some cheap liquid wax. This step is just used on the inside of the tips and you want to just get the tough spots.

5. Polish with chrome/metal polish like Mothers Chrome Polish (Surprisingly Mothers Chrome Polish is great stuff. I mean for OTC it works great and I have yet to find a job it can not tackle. Just make sure you shake it up a bit.)

6. Seal

I find that if you seal after you polish it keeps the pipes clean--longer. Also with my Dinan tips they seem to go "gold" after I drive hard and heat them up, or if I just let them get really dirty. If I just polish them, within a week I have the same "gold" pipes. This time around I sealed them with JetSeal109 and let it cure for a night before I buffed it out, and WOW. Now its been a month and they are the cleanest part of my car. Also I find it interesting how it helps them from turning gold in color. I want to not touch the pipes to see exactly how long it will protect them from the gold color caused by heat, to see exactly how good JetSeal is at protecting. I mean we all know it is the best looking sealant out now, but not the longest lasting for sure. You never know, it might do a better job on metal than it does on paint.

I use Bar Keepers Friend. It is a stainless steel cleanser sold primarily for cleaning stainless steel pots and pans. Takes off all the black soot stains with a damp rag and a little of the product sprinkled on the rag. Works well without scratching.

Blue Magic works great and is a great alternative to Mother's Mag and Al Polish.
