NEW Vanos solenoid. Half Engine Light
Hey guys, so my Vanos needed changed due to codes and engine light. Car is at 110k miles. So I pulled the trigger and bought new sensors. Put them in last night and car ran fine. Started it this morning and instant half engine light with both vanos code and boost shut off. Plugs looked seated. I'm lost at this point as to why? Any ideas?

2a87 is exhaust side.
3100 is a default. Try switchin solenoids intake to ext. Reinstall an old one. Clean them with some MAF spray cleaner. OR even contact cleaner or brake cleaner.

Just continue to troubleshoot by swapping them around to see if the error then follows on to the intake side like 335e92tx posted.

Sorry, solenoid! Not sensor. Anyways they are OEM. I got home and dug into it a little more. Put new one on bottom, old one on top. Bottom is the exhaust if I'm correct. Which is the code I got. I started car up and straight to half engine light and same codes. Cleared codes again. Started car up and no issues. Let it run for 5 mins. Took it on a drive around the block, still no codes. I'll drive it tomorrow for work and see what pops ups.
Before I got new solenoids and it was throwing codes I cleaned the vanos and it was fine for 600 miles. Only once did it go into limp mode. I really appreciate the help guys. I love this car and I understand the quirks and sometimes is just riles me up. I try and keep up on maintenance. Thanks again. |

Generally more commonly found with repeating Vanos failures or some type of foreign material in the oil system.

open oil filter housing.. take the cap and let the oil drain off under a bright light; see shiny flakes?

Well bad news. Went into limp mode again. Oil is clean, new Vanos. Only thing left I'm guessing is Cam Bearing Sensor or something? Gonna be lots of money at this point. I have an appt at my Indy guy on Monday. If it's too much I'll prolly trade it in.

Even with a brand new OEM part(s) I still wouldn't rule out a bad one straight out of the box. Could be some jackass returned his old faulty one for a refund or there was a mixup elsewhere. If you can absolutely rule out the solenoids then gawd help you. I did a pre-emptive brake cleaning on both of mine but still got the the code for the exhaust solenoid a few hundred miles later. Changed it out for a new one I bought at the dealership and thus far it's been okay. Please keep us updated.

Yes I did. Old one in top and new in bottom. Bottom is the one throwing the code. I'll try and put the other new one in the bottom tonight. That's also why I made Indy appt. They could be a bad return, and could just be bad from the start. One way or another I'll find out Monday. Thanks again for all the info guys. I'll keep ya updated. Just kinda frustrated right now. I love the car, trying not to give up. |

Update: So Indy Shop looked at it. They said they found a pinched Vacuum Line going to rear turbo wastegate. He said that is most likely the cause. I personally dont think so, but I will be driving the car hard today to see.
I also checked the Oil Filter Plastic Housing to see if that was still there (recently changed oil) and it was. So New Vanos on TOP and BOTTOM now, still holding onto the old ones. New ones are OEM. Oil looks good as well. He said I do have a small leak on Valve Cover Gasket . Ill have to set money aside to fix that. But if it ends up being Cam Bearing Ledge, im gonna have to replace that anyways if I am not mistaken? I also posted this on the MHD View my Log https://datazap.me/u/zooch7/post-boo...-9-10-11-12-24 Thanks again for all the help, knowledge and time guys! |

I was having the same issue with Vanos. I did the same thing and replaced the vanos with new ones. Well actually I cleaned my original ones a few times, then changed them out. Still got the codes and the limp mode. I ran a bottle of Liquimoly engine cleaner through it. I know engine cleaners are bad, bla bla bla. But the PO had changed the oil with Walmart brand oil, evidenced by the "service bottle" I found in the trunk.
Anyway, Liquimoly engine flush, and change out with Liqimoly 5W40. I have had zero codes and zero limps in 2000 miles. I do not know if there was just garbage in the engine from cheap oil, or if the cheap oil its self was the issue. But I have not had any service lights, oh, and I have not had to add any oil in the 2000 miles. I did do a valve cover and RB valve immediately prior to the oil change. That may have helps with consumption a bit. But ti was not flooding my driveway, just a few drips over a few thousand miles. Before I spent money on Vanos, I would flush and replace with good quality oil. I realize the OP said his car has clean oil. I thought mine did too. Clean oil means different things to different people. |
