Removing aftermarker phone caddy
Hi,
I recently bought a 56 plate 2nd hand 318d. The previous owner had an aftermarket phone holder fitted - it's secured to one of the air vents in the centre dash - just left of the start/stop button. The wires disappear between the trim and the top of the radio console so it's a permanent installation. Thing is... it doesn't fit my phone so kinda want to take it out. Where is this thing connected? Presumably to the rear-end of the radio? Does it get power from anywhere else? I think the antenna is wired up to the tax-disc holder (there's a wire hooked up to it). Anybody removed/installed one of these before? What's involved? Is it likely to leave a bit of scuffed dash behind? Cheers, Ben |

it is possibly a nokia phone kit with a holder secured by a pro-clip.
These are used to create a 'no-holes' installation. I have used pro-clips in my last three cars and have left no visible marking to the trim after removal. http://www.proclipusa.com/Default.asp You can prob find fitting instructions there as well - removal should become evident once seen how to fit? As for the phone kit, again I have fitted and removed a few Nokia kits. The tax disc holder will be the antenna but you could leave that in place. Prob best to drop the glovebox down http://www.bimmerboard.com/forums/posts/1863 There will be a small interface unit where the mic/antenna/cradle plug into. The power prob comes from the car radio and the sound fed through the car speakers. Often a proper car-specific lead is used creating a piggy back to tap into the cars wiring. The cars loom will plug into the one side of the harness and the other side into the stereo. The wires that tap into this piggy back loom will go to the car kit. Just unplug the piggy back loom from the stereo. Disconnect the other side from the wiring loom and then connect the loom back into the stereo. There also may be a mic fitted up by the interior light. The wires prob run through the windscreen pillars. It may be best to simply pop out the interior light and snip off the mic with a pair of cutters. Easier than trying to remove the windscreen pillar trim? Hope this is of some help, but difficult to advise too much without seeing what you have fitted! Paul |
