GTI as winter DD?

Hey guys, contemplating picking up a 2009 GTI (76k miles) as my winter DD since my 98 Civic bit the dust (RIP).

Figured Id ask here if anyone else utilized one as their winter car and what their thoughts are. The other alternative would be to get a “newer” used car like a Mazda 2 or something similar.

Thanks

Have you though about driving the M year round?

Personally, I'd just get a set of Pilot Alpins and save yourself a lot of hassle (and cost).

I have...but the salt on the roads here can get pretty nasty. Plus I have a 2 and a 4 year old, so having some extra optionality in that space is always nice.

I feel you on the salt part. You do have to wash your car in the winter as well unless you are okay with bottom rotting.

I bought my '14 GLI in 2013 and has been my daily ever since. I have 68k on it now. It has been a great car.

I bought snow tires for the F80 and did plan on driving it in the winter. But I've been extremely lazy and haven't posted the GLI for sale yet. Might just use it for one more winter.

Funny. I bought the M3 as my winter daily driver. The 911 is in hibernation mode. Had an S4 which was great, but I guess I just wanted an M3. Ive got a full winter set of wheels and tires coming. Hopefully soon.

Haha, well yes, in your situation I would likely do the same.

Good choice, put snow tires on and you will be good to go! I did this with a GTI before switching to a 4x4

As long as the GTI checks out mechanically, go for it.

I'm in a somewhat similar situation and the GTI is one of the cars I'm looking at as well. Seems like a great all-arounder....

What size tires are you getting on your M3? I'm going to daily it in the winter too

I have had two GTIs now and they are the perfect all around vehicle. I still have my MK7.

My old winter beaters were Subaru Loyale wagon with locking diffs and then WRX wagon. Both had snow tires as well obviously.

I'd take a pass on gti or other 2wd car

Ive got a square set coming. I think the wheels are 10x19 with 265/35/19 Pirelli Sotozero 3s. Im sure theyll work great. Hopefully theyll show up next week. Minnesota winter is right around the corner.

Just picked up a '17 GTI sport to replace my 13 year old daily about a month ago. So far, I love it. It's the perfect size, really peppy, and feels like a golf cart.

As long as you don't see recurrent 10"+ snowfalls, I can't imagine you not being okay with a GTI and proper snows.

Nice I wish I was in your shoes. Which 911 do you have? These must be as good for winter driving just put the proper tires on....
